The tables were lined with Christmas goodies and refreshments. Presi- dent Kerwin suggested that Emmett Favreau, Middle School Principal and Lyle Crofoot, Jazz Ensemble Director, be summoned to the next meeting to discuss trip details and to also explain the educational value of such an endeavor. Mr. Favreau began the presentation at this meeting by stating that he and Mr. Cro- foot had been discussing the proposed program since last year. \I want you to know,\ he said, \that the reason the issue did not come before you was my fault.\ Mr. Crofoot distributed a detailed six page report and gave a fifteen minute verbal presentation of the whole pro- gram background. In the spring of 1985, he and Mr. Hastings Perkins, High School Principal, received word that the Jazz Ensemble had been nominated to compe- tition participation. A group of nine children and their mothers (or grand- mothers) have been meeting two days a week for two hours a day since October. \The activity,\ said Karen Alex- ander, \is somewhat of an alternative or preparation for pre-K. It provides an oppor- tunity for the children to learn to get along with other child- ren and a time for mothers to help their children develop certain skills and enjoy watch- ing other children learn. It has also been a time for the moth- ers to enjoy being with other mothers.\ The play featured two scenes, the classic manger one and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Participating child- ren were Sarah Lauzon, Jere- miah Alexander, Jessica Leroux, Aimee Mainville, Neal Lauzon, John Wylie, Caitlin Langelier, Cailtin Smith and Whitney Smith. Helpers were the mothers. Narrator was Karen Alex- ander and music was provided by Kathleen Lauzon. Assist- ants were Donna Smith, Alice Langelier, Dawn Mainville, Penny Wylie, Ann Smith, Sandy Lauzon, Laurie Leroux. Helpers during prac- tice included Gladys Mayville and Charlotte Smith. Quite a large crowd was on hand to enjoy the play and refreshments were served. The Knights of Columbus, Council 5306, honored last year's Past Grand Knight, Tom Jock of Bombay, last Saturday evening at a banquet at the Fort Covinton K of C Hall. Master of ceremonies and Past Grand Knights, was Harold Lamay. Present Grand Knight, Donald Durant, was not able to attend due to illness. Tom Jock gave a speech thanking all those who have helped him during the year. Guest speaker was Sergeant L. John Raleigh who has been Station Master for 17 years at the Massena based New York State Troopers Barracks. Sgt. Raleigh has for many years studied and spoken to many and various groups on the subject of drugs which was his topic that evening. He gave factual statistics about drugs, their affects, advice on how to handle the problem and presenterd sam- ples of the more common ones. In Franklin and St. Lawrence Counties, he stated, \marijuana usage at 52 percent is still at the top of the drug usage list although alcohol at 92 percent is highest...and it is a drug as are cigarettes, coffee and tea.\ \I believe,\ he continued, \in what is called 'tough love.' Don't tolerate drug usage, but don't slam the door either. Also, setting a good example is important.\ He gave a detailed expla- nation of the drug CRACK (or ROCK) and indicated that Crack laboratories were prob- ably in the area. The troopers appreciate information, how- ever, he cautioned the public to be patient with the inves- tigators since the situation is often very complicated. Father Rolland Hart of St. Mary's of the Fort concluded the ceremonies.
