Page 6-November 13, 1986-Fort Covington Sun-Fort Covington, N.Y. Sun Sport Center All Northerns GirlsSwimming Just as they had during the regular season, Salmon River's Lady Shamrock swimmers placed *hird in the section X meet last Saturday. .oac' Boh AlpTs water churners,-who posted a 6- 4 record in NAC competition this year, totalled 175 points in the sectional at Potsdam College. Canton was the winner for the third year in a row with 318. Ogdensburg took second at 212. Behind the Shamrocks were Maione, Massena, and St. Lawrence Central, respectively. Unfortunately, none of the green and white swimmers get to go to state competition on Long Island. There were several strong place finishes, huwever. Ruth Kerwin fbreast- stroke) and Jessica Gaglianese 200 IM. were red ribbon winners an their races, while ii. i Johnson was second off the diving board. She had the lead after the six pre- liminary dives, which were hold in familiar waters-the SRCS pool-but was overtaken by OFA's Sue Collins by just a bit better then eight points. There were some improved times and fine performances on the day for Salmon River. Wendy Lacerenza wound up fourth in the breaststrokes, climaxing a season during which she seemed to grow stronger with each meet. Brandy Lapage gave an in- dication of days to come with a sixth in diving. Gaglianese was fifth in a tough 100 freestyle, as was Tracy Cartier in the 500 free. Alison Mitchell produced the thrill of her young swimming career with a fourth in the backstroke. Thus, even though they didn't get to the top, this can be termed a satisfying season for Coach Alpi and crew. The regular campaign contained exciting wins over nearby rivals Massena, Ma- lone, and SLC- the teams SRCS always loves to beat. Our congratulations to all involved. A good group of Salmon River athletes copped All- Northern awards after their seasons came to recent conclusions. The varsity soccer clubs had four All-Northern each, while the cross country runners and the girls swim team claimed three. Coach Kathy Burkett's, Lady Shamrock booters had two players make Division II first team. Stephanie Ri- chards (Salmon's leading scor- er) and Alison Swamp (goal- tender) were so honored by the divisional coaches. Theresa Adams and Amie Swamp earned spots on the Honorable Mention list. Shamrock fullback Dave Stowell made first team All- Northern from Coach Roman Nahirak's boys sooccer team. St. Lawrence import John Detringo was on the second team, while Shawn Martin and Ron Lewis gamed Hon- orable Mention laurels. Tom Lauzon led the SRCS cross country All-Northern contingent with a berth on the first team. Gino Tenance and Glenn Lauzon were Hon- orable Mentions. Coach Chris Disotelle had no nominations on the girls side. In the pool, Salmon's co- captains, Ruth Kerwin and Bea Johnson, earned second team places, as did up-and- coming Jessica Gaglianese. Under Coach Bob Alpi, the female swimmers won six exciting meets, and seem just heartbeats away from leader Canton.
