Sixteen minutes Cross Country SPORTS SCHEDULE powers on an equal basis. Unfortunately, Coach Roman Xahirniak's crew isn't quite on top yet. But even though last week's games turned out to be heartbreaking overtime losses for SRCS, the green and white threw a scare into two perennial NAC pow- ers on their home fields. On Tuesday, Salmon dropped a 2-1 extra period decision at Chateaugay. Fri- day saw a stellar Russel Bar- tlett goaltending effort in a 3-2 OT loss at Madrid- Wadding- ton. The latest verdicts leave the Shamrocks at 3-3, tied for third place in Division 2. At the Bulldogs' field last week, the vistors came up with only one goal by Dave Stowell to show for their offensive efforts. The rough Chateau- gay club held the Shamrock attack in check, but didn't manage much themselves. It took one overtime plus 45 seconds of the second before Lee Decoteau tallied the game winner tor the home team. Friday's contest at Madrid- Waddington was entertaining, to say the least. SRCS goal- keeper Bartlett was tested later, the Lame import got the equalizer. The clubs battled on, with SRCS showing much improved play. The green and white might have had the winner, but for a twist of fate when a Shamrock shot hit the crossbar with about five min- utes to go. The 2-2 score held up until the Jackets tallied in the extra period. There have been several highlights in the first half of the boys varsity soccer 1986 campaign. Probably the brightest moment so far would be Salmon River's 1-0 win at home over Parishville- Hopkinton. The Panthers, not known for humility or good sportsmanship in their recent games at SRCS (for example, their failure to shake hands and ethnic slurs well remem- bered from last year), were subdued by another sparkling performance by Bartlett in the nets. He turned aside some- thing like 34 P—H shots. Meanwhile, Ron Lewis got the game's only goal. The final horn brought frenzied jubila- tion to the Shamrock sideline, and only dismay to the Panthers. That win came in the mid- Chalk up two early wins for the SRCS cross country squad. Coach Chris Disotell's har- riers won their first dual meet of the season at home last Tuesday, 23-33 over Tupper Lake and a 15-50 forfeit over Madrid-Waddington. The second half' with some spectacular saves, of the season for Coach Nahir- frus- niak's hooters, shows much promise of more thrills and' It is indeed with a glad heart I write today's column. The Buffalo Bills have won their first game in the Kelly Era. The Buffalo Sabres are play- ing well in NHL exhibitions. And Salmon River's sports teams are off to flying starts. What more can a hometown sportswriter ask for? There are two sports that didn't get their own columns this week. I do apologise to those athletes, but die to a heavy schedule-made even tighter by coaching JV girls soccer in Massena- I can't get to school quite as much as usual. That should be cor- rected in a few weeks, when soccer season is over. I'll do the best I can for SUN sports readers until then. The SRCS girls swim team topped St. Lawrence Central, under Coach Bob Alpi, 49-34, in their first meet of 1986 last Thursday. No details are available as yet, but as soon as we get a rundown of the fin- ishers, we'll print them for Now if we could make it so the OTHER teams offense didn't score so much... Any way, after snatching defeat from the jaws of victory two weeks in a row, the Bills finally won, 17-10, over St. Louis, last Sunday. Attention, Ed Wagner: Pitts- burgh plays in Buffalo this season. Will the Steelers have won any games by then? The Toppers and Hackers have concluded another golf season at Cedar View, the team of Carl White and Norris Thompson won the regular season title, but were beaten for the playoff crown by John Herne and Don White. Last Friday's banquet was great fun. I guess we all had a good time afterwards, too. Yours truly and Bill Pelcher, in fifth place going into the final sea- son match, were soundly beaten and dropped to finish ninth. I '11 keep what few clubs I have left and wait for next year. Please note North Franklin minor hockey and figure skat- ing registration this coming Friday and Saturday, plus October 4, in the SRC Arena lobby. Be sure to get signed up if you're going to be on the ice with NFS this fall and winter. And a big thank you to the members who voted for the slate of officers last Wednes- day night. We'll work hard for the organization, believe me. Remember, folks - North Franklin is always looking for community minded adults who are willing to join and help any of our many programs. We have run out of space and time for now. Thanks for reading and, until next time, enjoy your sports. Covington 358-9060 Coach Dave White's Sham- rock JV boys soccer club has had rough sledding in its early encounters, suffering losses to Postdam (3-1), Madrid- Waddington (2-0), Chateau- gay (6-2), Parishville- Ho^pkinton (3-2), and Massena (5-2). Were sure they will get to the sunshine side of the ledger with a bit more dili- gence and hard work, and we wish them well. Question of the day: What's even more boring than an NBA regular season game? Answer: An NBA exhibition game. Even so, they're going to play one at the Lake Placid Olympic Center on October 18. It's the Atlanta Hawks vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers. The' cheapest ticket for the 7:30 PM tipoff is $7.50. I can pay that and sleep much more comfortably in other places. Still, if you like pro hoop, try to go. All the rest of us can take heart-college basketball prac- tice starts three days before that. As mentioned earlier, the Bills have gained respectabil- ity with one player signing- Jim Kelly, the Eight Million Dollar Man from the USFL. He has had an immediate impact on ticket sales and the play of the club. Buffalo foot- ball is exciting to watch, for the first time in manv years. It's nice to know your favorite team can score most anytime its offense gets on the field. HARVEST BAZAAR Sept. 27th 10 AM-4 PM Ft.
