New Office of Rural Affairs By Pat Musante Amidst the considerable concern around the area regarding shakey economic future, two bright gleams of hope emerged this week. It is expected that the Office of Rural Affairs will streng- then the state's administrative ability to do more to address the unique needs of rural New York by using existing agency resources to a fuller extent. These needs will focus on transportation (roads and highways as well as public and health and human services. We in the area are well aware that the words of rural residents are quite different from our city cousins. Approx- imately three million people live in population in the major- ity of states. These opportunity zones tions bade to the task force. Primary on the list of actions to take will be for the task force to promote a dialog with GM to discuss their future plans for their lost foam casting opera- tion which is still in the exper- imental stage. The \Lost foam\ casting process> the only one in the world, uses plastic polystryene particles molded in a plastic foam-like mold into cylinder heads. At this point this opera- tion is a great unknown. Also, on the agenda for the task force is the promotion of 12 megawatts of power which they would like to convince the State of New York and the Power Authority to keep the power in Massena as an inticement for industrial development. The power makes Massena unique, said Russell, in that the combina- tion of cheap power with con- ventional power would give a competitive edge to Massena. The task force will be made up of volunteers with little time to handle all of the prob- lems which will need to be handled. Therefore, sub committees will make their mark in this important operation.
