Page 8 January 30,1986-Fort Covtngton Sun-Fort Covingfron, N.Y. Up On Mainstreet Then and Now Photo captioned \Taken by Philip Gorman around 1930, Main Street, Rt. 37, and Water Street, Ft. Covington. (Photo compliments of Mar- tha Gorman King.) TODAY: The intersection of Water and Chateaugay Streets (Rt, 37) in Ft. Covington. Which is Main Street? (Photo taken Dec, 1985) By Pat Musante Among the many good pie- ces of advice I've received from Marion and Howard Lyons is to look at photographs with a magnifying glass. The details can be amazing. In the older photo, for instance, one can see two women in the buggy very styl- ishly dressed and wearing large hats. The men in the photo are wearing three piece suits, ties and hats. The dress almost seems to predate 1930, although i am admittedly no expert in historical attire. The vehicle in the center appears to be a truck, the oth- ers are definitely horse drawn and hitching posts line the old street. On the left is Matthews store, Dempsey's and the old Deneen, by then, probably the Macartney store and office. On the right is the old Eagle Block, Grant's store and the old Fire Hall. The buildings are difficult to accurately identify since some have had many, many owners. Note the light, the small tele- phone signs dotting the build- ings and what appears to.be hanging lanterns in front of Macartney's. The sidewalks are paved. In the modern photo, the increased network of traffic lights tell their own story. On the left, Matthews store has been replaced by Key Bank (not shown), the attractive white building is McElwain's Decorating Center, the Knights of Columbus building, the Laundromat and Gardners. On the right is Bruce Anderson Insurance. Westville FJD. Annual Report In December and January, 'the Westville Volunteer Fire Department responded to the following alarms: 8 rescues; 1 chimney fire; 1 vehicle fire; 1 house fire; 1 smoke scare; 1 siren malfunction, and 3 mut- ual aid requests. The 1985 calendar year ended with a total of 88 calls. Thirty four of these were of a rescue nature. Mutual aid was rendered to surrounding communities on 17 occasions, and received on 3. An average of 12.6 members responded to each alarm, for a total of 892 man hours spent in the course of duty. Much to the credit of com- munity residents, only 3 chimney fires were incurred for the entire year.
