January 9, 1986-Fort Covington Sun-Fort Covington, N.Y.-Page 7 for a second. Moments later, Francis Connors and Pat McCaffrey struck 1-2 in the 200 free. Peter Kerwin and Bob Alpi did the same in the 200 IM, and Pyke and Cantwell had a like finish in the 50 free. Charlie Williams won the div- ing competition, with Richard Gardner taking third. Leduc and Williams went the 1-2 route unopposed in the butterfly. Then White and Craig Arquette did the same in the 100 free. Connors won his second individual race of the day in the grueling 500 free, with Kerwin third. Alan Gardner and Leduc returned for a 1-2 in the back- stroke. Kim and Shayne Tenace posted a 1-3 clocking for the breaststroke. Jeff Boyea, Amos Connors, Brendan White, and Eric Bailey put the finishing touches on the devastating performance by combining for a win in the last relay. Tim Kleenan, Glenn Lauzon, Hall, and John Bucha- nan were second in the race in which, again, no Moriah swimmer was entered. HOCKEY Through a very busy holiday schedule, the SRCS hockey team retained its number one ranking among so-called \small schools\ in the state, according to the NYS Sportswriters Association. The latest poll, released Tuesday morning, shows Salmon River on top for the second week in a row. Currently, the green and sports a record of 9-1 - one of the best, regardless of school size. However, their unblem- ished (6-0) NAC Division II mark was put to a stern test in a midweek game (Jan. 8) at Potsdam. Since The SUN last pub- lished, the Shamrock icemen have played five games. Here's a brief rundown on each: SRCS 3, Norwood-Norfolk 0 - Salmon's defense totally draped itself all over the homes- tanding Flyers in a game just before vacation. NNCS was limited to just seven shots on goal, only one of which really tested shutout goalie Mitch Cook. But it took the Sham- rock offense time to get rolling, too. Craig Richards finally broke the ice at 5:03 of the second period, on a power play tally from Peter Radlein and Marcel Almond. The green and white finally iced a nervous game with two late tip-in markers. Tom Barnes got the first of those with just over a minute to play, deflecting a slapshot by Almond, who had gotten the puck after Richards won a faceoff. Chris Thomas topped the night with 22 seconds remaining, again tip- ping an Almond slapper past N- N netminder Gary Gushlaw. Chris Cook also got an assist on that. Gushlaw was a busy boy, indeed - stopping 33 SRCS attempts. SRCS 6, OFA 3 - It seems the Shamrocks always have good luck against perennial Division I power Ogdensburg. The open- ing game of the NFS-SRCS Christmas tournament on December 20 was no excep- tion. Salmon raced out to a 5-0 lead before the Blue Devils got on the board late in the second frame. Three of the Shamrocks . goals came on the man-up situation, and one was shorthanded. Barnes notched the hat trick, with two goals in the first period and one in the second. Radlein, Cook^and Almond scored the other three. Radlein and Almond helped the cause with two assists each, the same number as Jesper Romell tal- lied. Thomas, Todd Phillips, and Richards got one assist apiece. Cook made 24 saves between the green and white pipes. Shenendahowa 5, SRCS 3 - The first loss of the hockey campaign came in the Christ- mas Tournament champion- ship game, to the club ranked first among \large schools\ in the state. The visiting Plains- men built a 4-0 advantage until Almond broke through on the power play at 13.26 of the second period. Richards and Phillips assisted on that tally. Richards would chip in on the second Salmon marker, scored by Radlein (also from Thomas) at 6:29 of the third. The count stayed at 4-2 dur- ing a frantic time in the final eight-minutes of the contest. SRCS had numerous chances, including one glorious oppor- tunity that missed when a Sal- mon player wasn't able to push a pass into a wide open net. Shenendahowa rang down the curtain with an empty net goal with five seconds left. Barnes, Richards, and Almond were selected to the All-Tournament team. The Shamrocks outshot the Plain- men, 34-26. SRCS 6, New Hartford 5 - In their first game of the new year, played downstate at the Rome Catholic Holiday Tourney, the green and white came from behind in exciting fashion to beat the number three team in the state small schools poll. Radlein scored the first goal of the contest, at 6:50 of the opening period. He wasn't heard from again until midway through the third stanza, when his sharp shot off passes from Kichards and Romell tied the score at 5-all. The Shamrock sniper then completed his hat trick by scoring the game winner, with just 3 and a half minutes to go. Richards again copped an assist. Earlier, Andreas Birch- Iensen gave SR a 2-1 lead after the first frame on an unassisted tally with 16 seconds left in it. Radlien collected two assists in the second period, helping on goals by Mike Tremblay (2:50) and Toby Sunday (11:22). It was after that marker the green and white proceeded to sur- render their 4-2 bulge, as New Harford scored three times early in the thirc^period to storm into a 5-4 lead. That set the stage for the Radlein heroics. Cook stopped 26 shots, and the Shamrocks were outsjhot in the first and third periods. SRCS 6, Rome Catholic 1 - After a nailbiter the night before, the local icemen breezed to victory in the Janu- ary 4 RCH Tourney title clash. Richards helped out on the game's first goal, by Almond (10:34 of the first), then scored unassisted to post SR to a 2-0 lead after the initial 15 minutes. Again Richards tallied (at 6:11 of period two), this time from Birch-Iensen, to pad the green and white lead to 3-0. Rome Catholic responded with a goal at 7:53 to make it 3-1, \ Salmon, after two. Pirch-Iensen (from Radlein and Almond), Cook (from Phil- lips), and Redlein (from Richards and Barnes) rammed home shots in the third frame to salt away the win and the tour- nament crown. Cook thwarted 29 Red Wing attempts. Rome Catholic didn't help its cause much, being called for 7 penal- ties to Salmon River's one. Afterwards, Richards was honored as the Tournament's Most Valuable Player. The Shamrocks thus gained revenge against the Red Wings for two losses to them last year. by beating the hosts in their own tournament. Chip Shots Hello, and welcome to 1986.1 personally am very hopeful that this new year will be much better than the final month of the old one was. Some 20 veterans of the bas- ketball wars at Salmon River turned out for the hoop alumni game last Thursday night at the SRC gym. The contest was close through the first half, but the Even team pulled away from the Odds in the third quar- ter, and everitually posted a 113-73 victory. It sure was great to see some of the famous grads of recent years on the court and doing their thing again. Most of the members of Salmon's last boys Division II championship team were on hand, along with former section 10 MVP and now St. Lawrence University womens' captain Jocelyn Furnia. Best guess has it that Brian Herne (76) was the leading scorer. Many thanks to all who came, helped out, and watched. We hope this can now become an annual event. Jesse Jock and Steve Russell can hardly contain their joy. Their beloved New England Patriots are now in the AFC Championship game this Sun- day, against the Miami Dol- phins. (And to think my Bills really should have beaten the Pats earlier this year in Buffalo!) Sorry, fellows-this is the end of the line for Irving Fryar & Co. Look for Miami to win a close one. In the NFC, 111 take the LA Rams to upset Chicago. For all you pro wrestling fans Macho Man, Tito Santana, and the boys will again provide an evening's entertainment at the Lake Placid Olympic Cen- ter on Wednesday, January 29. Contact the box office for more details. You know, Mark almost has me hooked on this stuff. No, I can't believe it either. And aren't you glad to have your life settle back into a somewhat normal routine after the holiday hustle and bustle? Things have settled down a bit, although the local sports scene is quite active. We urge you to follow the SRCS Sports Calendar listed elsewhere, and note where and when your favorite team is playing. Then get out and cheer them on! It's time to hang up the old typewriter for this week. We'll do our best to cover the local sports scene through this hec- tic period, so stay tuned. Until next time, thanks for reading and enjoy your sports. afjank $ For Sale THANK YOU We would like to take this opportunity to thank all rel- atives and friends for the many acts of kindness shown to us at the time of my father's recent death.
