Apparently, students in 1908 had to take an examination in each subject in which they were enrolled AND THEIR SCORES WERE PUBLISHED! ELEMENTARY U.S. HIS- TORY AND CIVICS Rubie Armstrong, 97; Mabel Brill, 93; Kate Chatland, 89; Harold M. Davis, 81; Henry Derouchie, 82; WaHace W. M. Fay, 93; Walter Handly, 90; David Hilts, 87; Martin Holden, 94; Minnie McCarthy, 75; Flor- ence McFaddin, 76; Lota McFaddin, 90; Ruth McNaugh- ton, 75; Edith L. Potter, 90; Agnes Reardon, 78; Ethel L. Shoen, 90; Simon B. Smith, 83. In scanning the long list of examination results, one may draw several observations: 1) While ELEMENTARY U.S. HISTORY AND CIVICS scores were high, the majority scores were low, usually in the 60 > sor70's. Marion Hall led the English I exam with a 76; the rest were in the 60's. Did teachers grade harder then? 2) The marking scale ranged from 60 to 100 and there were very few scores above 90. 3) Student performance seemed very inconsistent, depending upon the subject. Edith Mayville received a. low 63 in English grammer and a whopping high 91 in French First year. No one seems to have scored consistently high. 4) The cirriculum was differ- ent from today.
