>age 4-March 21,1984-Fort Covington Sun-Fort Covington, N.Y. McElwain's 50th Anniversary Senior Citizen News Celebration Mr and Mrs. Erroi McEt .vain. Sr , celebrated their 50th vvecidiny anniversary Sunday. March 3. Faiher Clarence Devan celebrated the High Mass at which they renewed their vows. All their grandchildren had special parts in the Mass —Meg McEiwam, Stacey and Nicole Cunningham sang favorite hymns of the couple; Nicole also played the flute; Minka McElwain did the Bible read- ings; Cory Cunningham served the Mass and Rita Dustin, Jacolyn Montville, Bernard McElwain, Jr. and Scott Picker- ing presented the gifts at the a^ar. Erro! McElwain Sr. and the former Marion Foy were mar- ried March 5, 1935, at St. Ber- nard's Chuch, Saranac Lake, by Father Clarence Kitts, pas- tor. They were attended by Mrs. McElwain's sister, Eliza- beth Foy and Donald Walsh, a friend of the couple, both of whom are deceased. The honored couple are the parents of Errol Jr., Bernard, Mrs. Eugene (Anne) Pickering and Ms. Colin (Joan) Cunnin- ham. They also have nine grandchildren and six great -grand- children. They were honored at a rerpohon Sunday from 1 to 4 at Telephone Rate Increase Hearing By Carleen Burditt Many area senior citizens attended the pub- lic hearing Monday night in Plattsburgh on the proposed New York Telephone Company rate increases. Clifff Donaldson, Rick Ellis and Senior Citizens from all areas were present to testify. Many feel that they will just have t$ have their phones removed if this increase is allowed. The phone is no longer a luxury - it is a necessity! Can you imagine an emergency need, you're alone, disabled as many senior citizens are, and there is no phone because you couldn't afford it? And what about those who have, \Life-line\ the new support system, to help people remain in their homes. What will happen to them? The telephone is needed for Life-line to operate. Many felt th6 basic service user should not have to bear the cost for equipment they do not use in our area. No one wants to see N.Y.T. Company go out of business They have provided us with good service, and telephone communications are needed. On the other hand, the people who need this service the most are the elderly, the grand- children, young families with small children and farmers. Telephone service cannot be a luxury item. A solution must be found which is fair to both sides. Let your government offi- cials know how you feel about this issue/Write or call them. Do you feel the Public \Service Commission should grant permission for this increase?? Bills will be increased by as much as 45 percent.
