It was like a snowball that 8 tarts oat small at the top of the hill, but on its way down gets larger and larger until it is virtually unstoppable. FM's varsity football team, formerly regarded as a team going \extensive rebuilding,\ but instead lashed into the Spartans at ESM's homefield September 22 with a relentless attack by both the offense and the defense. The final score was 34-3 an FM triumph. It all started early in the first quarter when ESM took the ball over for its first posses sion The Spartans started down the field with no trouble, as expected, but before they got to the goal line, they were stopped by FM captain Jim Kiernan's defense and some sloppy ESM play. After the ESM field goal that resulted, it was all FM as the Hornet defense led by Kiernan and defensive back Joel Adour took the offensive game away from the Spartans. Adour's fumble recovery touchdown in the first quarter, and his clutch interception with a minute left in the first half which set up another touchdown gave FM the con fidence and momentum that would carry them for the rest of the game FM grabbed .131 yards of total offense, mostly on the arm of quarterback Lyle Buroker who had, what ESM assistant coach Dan Mental called, \simply a sensational game \ Buroker's passing ac counted for three touchdowns. an eight yard tally to John Cunningham, a 40 yard strike to the ever present Adour, and another strike to Rob Hudson which put the game away for FM. The other FM touchdown was scored on a 50 yard breakaway run off of a counter play by Dave Evans, who team 8 with Bruce Dew and Bruce Yancey in FM's backfield Whether it was just a sloppy ESM performance, a team picked by most to win the f division, or it was that FM has put together a team that will surprise many people, a team spurred on by emotion and determination rather than size and experience, the end result remains the same — Fayettevitle-Manlius routed ESM. ESM has a game next week that will tell which kind of team they really are as they go up against undefeated JD, while FM will enjoy a Homecoming Crowd taking on defensive minded Cortland.
