Major Panitza, the Bulgarian conspir- ator, was executed on Saturday last. On arriving at the place o f execution he made a confession to the chaplain. Th e belief is quite general throughout Europe that Russia is getting ready to interfere in Turkish affairs. The Armenians have re - peate d l y appealed in vain to England, Germany, and Austria to uphold the terms o f the treaty of Borlin by compell- ing Turkey to recoghiz\ the rights of Armenians, as stipulated i n that agree- ment of the powers. The danger now is that the conflict in Erzcroum may lead to open rebellion all over Armenia, in which event Russia would undoubtedly take sides with the Christians and seize Erzeroum, if not the whole o f Armenia, thus bringing o n tlw long dreaded catas- trophe of a European war. FOURTEEN MILLIONS GAINED. Th e Country's Population is Now A1>ou& 64,500,000. Tlie Census Office at Washington, says a late dispatch, is already figuring up the returns o f the enumerators from the dif- ferent parts of the country. Calcula- tions based upon the returns already re- oeived indicate a gain of 14,000,000 in population fo r the country since 18S0, malii'i g the present population 61,- 500.000. New York continues to hold the lead among the great cities, with considerable over 1,500,00 0 inhabitants. The re- turns indicate that Chicago has displaced Philadelphia for second place, although th e figures are so close that corrected re- turns may change the result It is prob- able, however, that Chicago, with 1,085,- 000 inhabitants, is the second city of the .country, while Philadelphia wil l show fully 1,050.1X10 people. Brooklyn, with 80b,000. remains the fourth city. New York and Pennsylvania still hold th e lead i n population among the States, with a big margin to spare. Ohio prob- ably stil l holds third place, although Illi- nois i s pushing her so closely that it may need the official figures to decide the matter. Missouri and Indiana follow, The figures indicate that Massachusetts will go down from the seventh to the eleventh position, Michigan, Texas, Iowa, and Kentucky passing above her. Kan., states that-increasing excitement is shown in tliat State over the conflict between the State and Federal power as a result of the \original package\ decision. As fast as arrests are made under the State la w applications are filed for a writ of habeas corpus in the United States cir- cui t court and releases obtained. Judge Foster, o f the United States cir- cui t court, has now complicated matters by issuing an order restraining the county ofnciuls from engaging i n further prosecutions of dealers inj>rigiual pack- ages, pending an investigation by tho Federa.1 court, which i s set for this week. If these habeas corpus and injunction proceedings should succeed they would effectually bar the State officers from making any investigation or inquiry aa to whether the \original package\ deal- ers are violating any o f the criminal laws o f the Stale. Governor Humphrey has issued an order to the attorney gen- era l to appear at the trial of the oases before~the United States court, and to represent the State in the matter. A number of pri- vate bills were considered and acted upon. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Tlie hill known as the Atkinson rail - road bill, granting certain privileges to the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad i n the city of Washington, was further con - sidered , and went over under the rules . Th e legislative appropriation bill, aa amended i n the Senate, was reported aud considered , and. upon motion, the House insisted upon its disagreement to the Sen - ate amendments. After consideration of variou s private bills , House bill 5381, known as the silve r bill, was taken up as amended by th e Senate, the question being upon the adoption o f the Senate amendment*, and, after debate, the Son- ate amendments were rejected and a resolutio n asking for a conference on the bill adopted. The naval appropri- ation bill was taken up for final con- sideration and passed . The bill known as the federal elections bill (I L R. 10,958) was reported, aud occupied the attention of the House largely during the balance of the week. National Capital Notes.
