Port Jeffer son Band Will Play Durin g Day. >: The Merchants' Division or the local Chamber of Commerce Is co- operatin g with the Port Jefferson ¦Hi gh School in malting up a program for t he Fun Feat- held a a nually on the a fternoon of Memorial Day. This will be t he third year since the Ince ption ot a program which has es tablished itself and won the praise and co-operat ion of Port Jefferson and vicinit y to such an extent that •the demand for lis continuance as- sures its success. The deta ils of the program have not yet been arran ged. Efforts are being made to secure as a high liner for the . afternoon two baseball teams for married and single ladles. It is understood that on indoor baseba ll wi ll be used , that the baseball dia- mond will be made about one half its usual size , and that all the par- & ph e rnalia used for such a game will be furn ished by the local high school. This game will be an e . x- tremejy popular one. The ladies ere to costume in a manner wh ich, is In keepin g with the s n irlt of the Tun peat. . Jud ges will decide the best costume on this ' l asts and a prize of $6 will be given. Of course , the Joints and Ltales -w ill resume their annual classic This year it la expected that all ¦ players on each of the two teams ¦will be \dolled u p \ for the game. A prize of $6 trill be awarded to the Joint or the Lizzie best costum- ed in Keeping with the spirit Of the T \ ua Pest. T here will be a flag raising cere- mon y and . the draping of a flag pole by students of the high school . The fiel d has been carefully mowed and Is in excellent condition , and a ver y pleasing ceremony is promised by high school , o fficials. The Port Jefferson land will be on hand to d ispense music during the entire afternoon. ' U. S . ARMY PLANE FORCED DOWN DURING S TORM M ade Daring Take-Off On Monday From a Bamboo , Runway A U. S. army plane , piloted by Lieutenants Le gg l tt and McKenna , made a forced landi ng oa the Mil- ler Place beach on Sunday during one o f the heaviest rain and elec- tric storms o f the season. The plane was from Texas and took oft from M itchell Field headed for Bu ffalo, N. Y. The storm was at Its peak when the plane arrived over Port Je fferson about 3:30 o ' clock. A beautiful landin g; was made on the beach but the wei ght ot the plane caused the whe a ls to sink deep in the . sand. Word was sent to Mitc hell Field and on Monda y an army truck and a crew ot men came out and built a short runway—ab out 1 00 ft. long out of bamboo. The motor was start- ed , and the plane took off over the water without ml s ha c . The gas tank of the plane con- tained 95 gallons when it landed here , and to make It li ghter tor the takeoff all but 2 0 gallons was dis- posed of , leavin g only Just about enou gh to reach Mitchell Field. .One ot the ground men sent out from Mitchel l Field claimed that the take o ff on the short flimsy runway was a darin g feat.
