Twenty-two bottles of whiskey, g in and wine , seized In a raid on tlio Pecoiilc Inn , have been anallzed by a chemist and found to contain no po ison or Injurious Ingredient s. Robert Lafferander, a chemist of Brooklyn , a dmitted , tn r eply to a quest ion asked by former County Judge John R . Vunk, counsel for Mrs. Hi ll , that lie did not procure a permi t from the Federal Govern- ment to tra nsport the Intoxicants in his automobi le from the District Attorney ' s office at Rlve rhend to his Brooklyn home where He made the ana lysis. Lafferander stated that was not aware be was required to have a permit . Asked by former Judge \Vunk w hat he had charged the county for analyzing contents of the 22 bottles , Lafferander re plied the charge was $ 222 or ?10 a bottle . He stated that he had analyzed the contents of 81 bottles and other receptacles for Suffolk County since Au g. 1, includ- in g tbe 22 bottles offered in e\idence at t he trial of the Indictment against Mrs. Hill and the charge had been at the rate o f $10 a bottle or a total o f $180. Defendant' s coun sel In- quired if Lafferander could tell wl , atl.rt» . t ht * llnun v, nn« mt fl a h o fn Tn the enactmen t of the Eighteenth Amendment nn d the Volstead Act. The w itness was unable to state pos- itively. He did say, however, that It was synthetic and not distilled. Former Judge Vunk Introduced In evidence t he other bills Deputy Sher- iffs had presented to tlie county for expenses over a given per iod , Includ- ing Investi ga tions of speakeasies and other places against which public nuisance compla ints had been made. The bills , w hich hud been paid by the count y, were obta ined from the f iles of the County Auditor ' s o ffice, being sub-opened by the defense. These were placed In evidence to show the amount o f money that lias been expended In obtaining evidence In the public nuisance cases. Several prominent men who had been In the Peconlc Inn since Aug. 1 last , w hen Mrs. Hill assumed own- ersh ip, were cal led as witnesses by t he defense. All testified the place was c lean; that they saw no Intoxi- cating liquor sold there , and that there were no d isorder or lrregularl- k U ^U cltA.
