The growth ot the town ot Brook- T iav e n has been trem endous In the past years , and yet , the township is In Its Infancy. Population always brin gs problems of government , and yet. Insofar as the public health Is concerned , the town ol Brookhaven bas in the past done very little , ex- cept ing pass, certain sanitary regula- tldns , nearl y all of which have ele- ments of benefit. However , in order to make these sanitar y regulations of advantage , t hey must be strictl y en- forced. Tl l han T O nKlTlitnn P.riinnfi fnnnd hi l ll- se l f alone on the Islan d it mattered but little how he Jived or what ' lie did , but immediatel y upon finding Frida y, it necess itated a different sys- ter of l iving. So it Is with the population. ¥e - « 11 more or less are responsible for the hap piness and pleasure of our ne ighbors, and both . happiness and p leasure are based largely upon ¦healt h. A few years ago , a typhoid epidem ic broke out in one of the ¦vll- \ J a ge s of the township, and I am rell- -abl y Informed that the investigation -showed quite ' positivel y that th ere was a t yphoid carrier , a man who c arries t yphoid germs -and 'Btlll : is wel l himself , who was . employed mi lking cows and doing the general work about the da iry. ' T here ¦was -a sprin g on 't he place and this spring was used for the wash ing of milk , ¦cans , wit h the result that the spring was filled with millions of . typhoid ¦ germs. Obviously, t he milk -was contam ined and many were made ill and some , gave ;their lives. The per- g onal expenditures for physicians , hospital costs , nurses , and medic ines were terr ifflc , and yet, .up to this time, no rea l effort is being made to nee to it that the mi lk sold in the townsh ip of Brookhaven has any real -attention. Th is regulation re- ceives but comparativel y little atten- tion and in some cases It was un- doubtedly true that the public ' s healt h was endangered. In the town of Brookhaven nearly , ever ywhere are established places Ior the purveying of food. Some of thorn are c lean and wholesome , and others dangerously unc lean , and yet in no manner Is a public appraised of tho situation, and I definit ely state as a fact that these feeding places are mot properl y examined and proper ly classified. Another sub ject of interest is tho f illin g of cattle for food. While it is true that the pre ponderan ce of moats una iowi consumed in t ne township . are examined by the Federal govern- ment , still aftor t hat examination these foods- are convo yed In trucks, •generall y, into tho township, and I feel safe to say that pr acticall y in no instance has tho moat on these trucks ovor, been tested within tho town , and fu rther , that the cattle and fowl killed for market within t lio town have had no Investigation whatsoever. Vegetables , fruits and food are sold from wagons and from tho street , and particularly is It true that Sanitary and Building Codes B adly Needed Know Mora About the Plumbing and Hoa ting Equipment in Your Homo. Better to ' build this fundamenta l sa fety into every , home and all other buildings than to include meaningless , t hough costly, features solely for ap- pearance or luxury. There Is no econ- omy In compromising on saiety. Metal lath construc tion Is better than the bu ilding codes demand—but In the long run of o cr vlep this construction proves economica l by eliminating e x pensive repa irs nnd replncements. Just as it pays an In- dividual ,, to look ahead and plan Its future. Most of the larger cities of Amer ica have accepted the Idea. Some have been applying it with good resu lts ; others huve been Inclined to la g. In the layer c i as3 Kansas City must be Included. A few days ago a proni l slng move for re gional 'planning In this metro- politan area was started. In the city proper , planning Is a familiar topic. Yet Kansas City remains without a com prehensive program for develo p - ment t hrough,a period ot years , with definite projects listed for attention to t he order of their urgency, as near- l y ns can be determined in advan ce , sa ys the Kansas City Times. T bnt It is practicable to frame such a plan has been shown by other cities, notab ly Chicago nnd more re- cently Detroit In the latter a ten- year progra m has been devised , with improvements listed and their appr o x - imate cos t and the necessary tax rate determined. Another example, of a somewhat different type, Is furnished by Philadel phia. It Is announced that cons truction there, much of it private . Through co-operative . effort , tlie aim will bo so to distribu te the work through mt. years that employment and other con- ditions af fected may be reasonabl y stabil ized. The program Is only In tbe stage of. ser ious consideration , but it invites attent ion through its obvious possibil- i ty and benefits. It is said that un- employment in the city is onl y about 5 per cent. Tims to provide work for all who might desire it would be nei ther difficult nor burdensome. On t he contrary, it would be sound busi- ness procedure. It suggests the feasibility of the Hoover proposal for stabilizing em- ployment by orderl y planning years ahead , wi th a reserve of construction projects and funds. In its public and private undertakings, the country will have to come aroun d to this better wa y of doing liuslness. The cities , es- pec ially, ure \ in position to exercise foresight and lay their plans for or- derly , businesslike development Benent o in Community * . Usually every member ot t he household will care- less ly throw anyth ing from hair pins to rubber ' boots Into toilets , lavatories , bath tu bs or sinks—and b lame the Plum bing and Heating Contrac tor for the results. o Siio of Lot Important. The Importance of- buying a large enough lot for , tho home cannot Be overem p hasized. If one tind to choose It would bo. preferable to pur- chase a large lot in a mon inexpen- sive part of town or c i tj than to choose a sma ller lot in a more costly localit y—a lot which is no wider than that required by law to hold the house. To be sure there are some types of houses which can adopt themselves admirably to a nar row setting, while other houses equally well desi g ned are ruined by not being given llio proper back ground. One fact ,, however , s tands mil above all others to be /remembered In cnu- s i derlng the question of n iiimse nnd lot ; that Is to study the lot. before one bn ys It In reference to tlio type of house one antici pates building, and once having bought the land , consid- er a gain the type of bouse best suited to It , before the first spadeful of ground Is broken.
