WILL PKESENT THROUGH THE BR .E AK.ER.S Moving Pictures Monday, Tuesday, Wed n esday Friday and Saturday Nights Dancing after the show next Friday Night BRUTALLY ASSAULTED George Jones (Colored) Attacked By Richard Hamper and Son. (¦corge Jones , an ino ffensive nnd peaceable colored man , was brutall y assaul ted last Friday ni ght , and the incident has aroused much excitement among the peop le of Tort .lefferson. The two men who assaulted .lones are Itichard Knmiier , who conducts a hotel on the Coram road , about a mile and a half from the Port .Ic l f erson sta- tion , and his son , Kicliard Kamper , jr. They were arraigned before Jus tice i icaie , on the charge of assault in the third de gree , and asked for a jury trial , which is being held this Friday. Acc ording to .tones ' story, which is confirmed b y several eye-witnesses , he was sil ling quietly in Ihe etcur store of (ten. T. l iaylcs , when Kainpcr , senior , came in , apparentl y in an intoxicated condition. He walked over to where .lones was si lting and grabbed him un- der the chin ' , lifting him from the seat. .Jones mildly remonstrated and then Kamper addressed some insulting re- marks to him and struck him. He dared .lones to come outside , and the latter went out. There the colored man was more than a match for his challenger , but Kampcr ' s son happen- ed along and mixed in the fray, beat- ing and kicking the colored man. •tones finall y got away from them , but a li ttle later Kamper , re-enforced b y several of his friends , attacked the col- ored man again , goug ing out an eye and otherwise injuring him. The at- tending p hysician has little or no hope of savin g the eye. BELLE TERRE NOTES. Mrs. Free!hi ts moved into the Dean Alvord home. IL K. Peek of New York was the guest of I... ( . ' . Miss Ka therine King, of DM Field , on Saturday afternoon entered the en- gine house under the windmill and water tank near her home , lo investi- gate the condition of the pumping en- gine , when to her great fright she realized that the entire structure wa s giving away at the founda tion. Pres- ence of mind assured her (ha t b y any e ffort to escape she would be crushed to dea th. To remain inside seemed equall y risk y, but she kept her station close b y the motor. In an instant the tank , holdin g -1 , 01 X1 gallons of water , tilled to its limit tha t day for the ( irsl time in two years , had struck the ground directly in from of the eng ine house door. A heap ' of ruins and a H ood of water following a frighlfu l crash , which alarmed nei g hbors near and far , and broug ht many t o the scene was the result. The windmill , ut the top, which had served its mis- sion years ago previous to installin g the engine , accompanied b y the skeleton framework , made the next descensi on while the buildin g in which Miss Kin g remained prisoner , was ail the time gradually being tilted from its founda- tion. When the wreckage finall y ap- peared stationary, she found that her miraculous escape could only be attri- buted to the two rods which had sup- ported the back of the building, its side being within a few inche s of Miss Kin g ' s head when it was arrested b y this section of the engine , where she had stood throu gh the frightful calam- ity awaiting her fate , which she claims seemed peril ous from ihe first intima- tion. Miss King resides alone wi th her m other who is suffering from the shock she received when conscious of lier dau ghter ' s danger. Th e foriunate woman is a teacher of hi gh repute. Several years ago she conducted a large seminary at Setau- ket , at that time instructin g pupils from far and near , hut this undertak- ing proved too much for her health , and since then , from time lo time , she has done private teachin g in languages and classics , spending much of her time in Xew York City, with an oc- casional tri p abroad. Maintenance of Suffolk' s Poor. The annual report o! Superintendent of the Poor William llirseh shows an economical administrati on of the conn , ty instituti ons at Yup liank.
