Saw nothing of note until I reached West Yaphank ; here I noticed the &ur v ey for the road lead i n g in a strai g ht Hue from Be?lport to Woodhuli' s Landing, .M illers Place. A liltle farther on I saw one of the Bellpor t Land Improvement Co. ' s s % r emies which came up to the road from lh e south . Here , I would mention , I soon passed Uie extensive peach orchard); o! Dr. G. Sweezey, com prising- , I s h ou l d taink , about tw e nty acres. Then passing on through the quiet a ud thrifty village of Yaphank , I took a turn to the west ti l l I in tersected the road leading to BeD po r t , drivi ng along a mile or two. Marked si gns of im provemen ts were visible on every han d ; broad avenues were graded ;it ri g ht ang les al l the way to Bellport , w ith here and there a small cottage , first to (he ri ght and then to the left , and in- creas in g iu numbers in every direction as I sped on my j uurney; and then appeared the tail c bimn ft y of u factory on the rig ht u t a distance , w ith now ami th eu a hotel of stately proportions. Finally I began to see signs of the much talked of b'cycie road , with ) is tali beams sUii u iing erect and a beam faslcnud on near the lop crosswise . As I neared it I alighted and ' took a general survey of lhe ptci i l ' ir structure cxieuaivg up and down i >s far as one could see. I shiill not attempt in this short article to exp lain i t s coasiruc- tion , but may do so later on . To the south of the C ountry Road they have made a beautiful lake with building lots on cither side. At the lower end the)' have con structed a lock to rais - e boats from <he b»y Iu the lake , all adding to its beauty. Then I made a call on Mr. E. B ; Davie , the popular jiveryinan of the place , and inspec ted M3 magn ificent baru and its fine equipments. Its dimensions are 100 feet long b y 60 deep. -What attrnetwi my attention mo3t of ali we . re the beautiful roa«I? , which are fuily equal to our driving tracks . A NoBTn Sideu. An Explanation , Edi tohb Echo:— Will you please allow me a small space in your paper , as I wish to state the case as it is , an d not as Mr. E benezer Reeve Tepiesents it. I under- stand he accuses me of being hogg ish and cutting wood that did not belong to me. I will suy iu the firEt place that I had the co n s ent of Highway Commissioner 1STotton , road master Bo bbins and section master Punck to clear up the road from Daniel Gildersleeve ' s to John Re e ve ' s house for w hat wood I could get from it , which w ould b e , perhaps , one-half the actual value of the labor attached to. it. Sir. Reeve came to me and wished me to stop until he ssw Mr. Norton. I did as he re- quested. H e saw Mr. Norton p,Dd that g ent leman gave him a note to give to me. I was not at home and be gave it lo my wife , and h i3 conduct and language at lh«i time was not such aa one woul d expect fr< - m a gentleman. I have not cut any wood without permission , neither have J stolen any. C an Mr. Beeve say as much ? If he can , w o uld h e not h ave to e x pl ai n where he got permission to cut and cart home five large trees wh ich stood in the hi g hway in front o f my w if e ' s p ro p erty, wh ich , I shoul d think , bel onged to the town ? Since Mr. R. is so wel l posted on law , with presumabl y so much loos e change to back his op inion , it is a s ha me he canuot get a chance to use some of it . I have heard that he said if he bought that place he would make the people of Echo look on t h eir b ook , and so he mi ght if he can gel his property deeded to him across other people ' s property or beyon d where he owns. We poor , people who have 75 or 100 feet frout wouid stand a poor show with one apparentl y so selfish and overbearing. I wish it to be understood by the reader that I do not cons ider myself the only one who w:»s benefited b y the trees wh ich Mr. Reeve cut and carted home -without per. m i ss i on from any one , for 'they were a great convenience to the general public , of which you , Mr..Editors , are well aware. Datid Petty . WRECKED ON TME BEACH. T he heavy wind of l londay i s ight caught a number of vessels on the . b each between Millers Place and Rock y Point , and sev- eral wrecks are reported. They belong to the wood fleet aud had laid . on t he b e a ch to load with cordwood during the day un der fa v orable conditions of weather. A short time before the tide suited for them to le iw e , the -wind Veered to a northerly quarter and blew with great fury. Th is soon created a choppy sea which caused the vessel s to pound with much force upon the beacb , and soon they sprang a leak. The men o n boa r d o f t h e v ess e ls worked w i th a will at the pumps , but in some in- stances the odds were too much against them and they were powerless to accom- p lish anything. Th e vess e l s on the b each at the t i m e w ere the schooner Sharp Shooter, Capt. Abrews ; sloop Emperor , Capt ain W. H. Dewick ; sch o on e r W o nd e r , C apt. Allen ; schooner Observer , Capt. E. Smi th , and sch o on e r Nel e o n , C apt. R. D. Tillotson. Th e Emperor and the Nelson are both wrecked beyond repair . The Nelson floated before the other ve e- seb and had started west when the squall- struck and drove her ashore . . The remaining vessels , favored by good weather following tho heavy blow , i havo since - been floated. The ; Sharp' - Shooter arrived in the harbor on Tuesday night , and the Wonder and Observer camu in on Wednesday. The Observer was probabl y injured the least of all. C apt. Carr , who owns an interest in ' tlie Sharp Shooter , has sailed her for some time , but recentl y he ha d a little misun - . demanding with Capt. Abrew, who is a larger owner , and he refused to go another tri p. This explains why- Capt. Abrew was in command when the vessel wen t ashore.
