With all my ' f r ie n dli n ess to George J a > Boutllllcr— \Boots \ — and high re- ga rd for others interested and attached to the Long; Island Railroad I must p rotest against what can only be des- cribed as stup id \ railroa d ing. \ I unfortunately had to go Into New York City the other morning on a train that would get me in town before half past eight. I admit that It Is not often that I take such an early train , for at my time at life early rising Is not the pleasure that It was when I was younger. Per- haps therefore my surprise is under- standable when I found that the crowd that , boarde d the train at my station absolutely filled every seat in the train. X must confess that the men and women—ypnn g and old—In that train f j l l cd me with pride as an American. These r o^ rt and women most of whom had to arise between five and six o ' clock In order to make that tra in were as fine looking a body of citizens as could be found anywhere . In the w j r l d. . On poi nts they would, outclass any similar b o dy of peop le In any country , that I have been In Eurone where 1 have seen people I n similar occupations , arising at a similar hour and . going to work at a simila r time. These early rising and eaily working Americans were-bright looking, smiling, clean looking and , tastefully. and pleas- antly dressed. There was not one that did not have individuality and assert- iyeness and ari a o undance of spirit together with pride arid reserve even to the two young men in front of me , who , after glancing throu gh a copy of a daily pictor ial, apparentl y a joint in- vestment , started' to ¦wrestle and for one hour—between ^ even and ei ght o ' clock—were so bubbling over with life that they could not sit still. As we neared Jamaica and my sleepi- ness at this early hour began to over- come me I am afraid that I got rather petulant and adopting the language that I thought they might understand I said: > .. .. ' . , ' , • \Cut it out, wont you please.\ The fine blond ' young man . full of vigor ana life turned around at-me and retorted : \Doyo u own this train?\ • ' ¦¦ ¦ ' ' .
