Bieaermefer—A New Vogue for an Old German Period EVERY once m a while , an old style of ftirniture and decora- tion takes a new lease on life and becomes popular . And when the period is one of the lesser ¦ known , as in the case of Bieder- meier which has just \ come back \ , i ts revival is all the nore exciting i and intcrcstin f r. What of the Biedenneier revival? Wh ere does Biedenneier i corne f rom? Is It practical for use in the av erage American home? Is it too trick to be endurin i j? These are some of the questions that are bound to come into the mind of in- s ensible homemaker who is con- temolatin _ r a cha nge in the decora- tion _f her living or dining room and would like to do something a li ttle more interesting than her n eighbors. Bied enneier was not originated by an architec t of that name , as a New York store advertised some years ago, Bi-dermeier as a person , never existtd. Like Babbitt , he is purel y fic titious. -And yet he is the symbol of a wh ole stratum of Ger- man life. He was invented , like Uncle Sim , to include all the mid- dle class German charac teris tics of a particular period. And when a furniture and decoration developed tha t was distinctly for that middle (class , i t was given the name of the { character tluxt was its symbol i Like Herr Biedermeier , the ftuni- ( turc which bears his name is s ub- . tantial , comfor table and in_BJi_ - tive in a heavy, florid way. Since ' Em pire furniture and decorate — '• \ ' were the order in Eur ope at tha t i titnc , Biederme ier is natural ly the •German bourgeois expression _ of this sty le. I t lacks the distinct ion ' and jrrace of the Empire but has a By BERTHA ANNE HOUCK certain picturesque quality wbich the more aristocratic style lacks , and ce rtainly it is more comfort- able. The very cumbersome pieces , wi th their heavy architectural qual- ity, can be avoided in selec ting Biedermeier fu rniture for the mod- e rn home. The d isti ng uishin g characterist ics of Biedermeier furn iture are the use of pain t , of fl oral decoration and co ntrasting woods. Our exten- sive employment of painted floral de signs , i n the form of deca i co- mania transfers and stencils , had its ori gin i n the Biedermeier sty le. As Empire furniture and decoration followed classical lines , so did the Biederm eier. But in the latter case , it was pretty well mixed up with the floral motifs which the Ger- m ans of the middle classes had bor- row ed from the peasant class , along with the idea of painting fur niture. They painted the full blown roses and the fat , fan tast ical flower and frui t shapes , s tanding up, 8ti_I y in Grecian urns , on their furniture or on plaques , or else twined them with the laurel arou nd the walls. In the twen tieth century house , th ese painted decorations on walla and furniture , as well as acces- sories such as mirrors and plaques , will be found to be the mos t inter- es ting expression of the Bieder- nieier w _ _ e. And there need be no fear of addin g one rose too many to a Biedenneier garland , any more than there i$ to a Vic torian ,whe ther that garland be on the - wall or on a chair back. » The back ground for Blede_meier furni ture is the same as it is for Em pire. Acc essories-and occasional furn i- ture for the Biedermeie r room have an imaginative turn that is little shor t of absurd in some instance. and in others , have a tender , whim- sical quality that makes then ) en- dearing possessions. A clock in some fantastical shape , a mirror which has the arch itectural lines ot a Greek temple in miniature or a s tool that is shaped like a smalt animal are typical of this appeal to the imagination which the Bieder- meier s tyle , a t its most amusin g, makes. And yet when this playful quality takes frequent cumbersome t urns , like a bear tr ying to -waltz , it is to be de plored rather than ad- mired. Tall pier glasses , ama zingly awkward in their proportions , heav y tables and chairs are to bo ¦voided b y the modern homemake * who _ doi_ K Biedermeier. counted at a lower rate and also re- ceive tho advantage of a lowor in- surance premium .
