' The Harrison Building and the Johnson Building, two big, atoel and mafflfnr-y inodem buildings, had been guttod by the flames, which started wt 2 o'clock in the Harrison Building; the Augusta Chronicle Building* K«& believed a total loss, the Albion hotel was badly damaged, the Geneeta Ho- tel was badly burned, Stohtertdrug* store was ,a totalloss and other btisl- riess firms were hard hit. - „ The loss, was variously estimated, soma declaring it would ceajch J4.B0O,.- 000 while others placed it as low as . tifiOjBJlOJLL. _^-.__- -_Ll -J • No loss of life was reported. Soon after fire was discovered In the Harrison Building it broke out in Johnson Building and then spread to Other structures. The Augusta fire fighting ibrde became alarmed and calls • were sent to several nearby towns for assistance. The Alkehi 8. C-fire department's relief force soon reached here and helped in subduing the blaze. The Augusta Chronicle office, do- stroyed'lft the flames, housed valuable files *>f this newspaper,. They were burned according to best information. T*e-^3h\ron4ete did not -snapend publl'- cation, the paper was issued from the -office- ef a cohtempprary. An area of four blocke appeared doomed when calls for assistance wer'e sent, but many of the structures with- in this district finally were either saved entirely or protected from total destruction. There was little wind. That there was no loss of life is probably fee to th« fap.t that the two big office buildings were burning \ fiercely •before tho hotels were touch- , ed.
