Rural telephones are those which have numbers containing the letter \F and will be reached by dialing 15 and giving the operator the directory num- ber of the desired party. Certain telephones vyill have no dials, and they, of course, will be used as at present. Note: To call other parties on your own line, do not dial . the directory number,. dial the code number which appears on the transmitter card opposite the directory number of the desired party. How to Make a Local Call Look up the number in the new directory delivered ^hortly-befbre consolidation. All telephone numbers will be changed. Suppose the number to be called is Geneva 2743. Remove the receiver completely from the hook beforeyoa start to dial and do not replace it or dojmtmove the hook while you are dialing. Flace the finger in the hole through which\ \2\ is seen. When he does so, indicated by a louder click in the receiver, hang up your own receiver ^4^-a^ult^^^ To Call Another Party on Your Line Look up the directory number of the desired party. If this number appears on the transmitter card, dial the corresponding code number shown thereon. \ - • After dialing, place the receiver on the hook while waiting for the called party to answer. Your bell will ring intermittently until the called party answers. Then remove your receiver and you are ready, to talk. If the called party \does not answer, remove, your receiver for-a^full second which will stop the bell ringing. Then replace the receiver and the connection between the two telephones-will be broken. To Make a Toll or Long Distance Call—Dial \O\ This will connect you directly with the toll or long distance operator. Give her the desired number and she will make the connection. To Call Rural Operator \14\ \15\ To Call Another Party on -your line vi aa extension station, consult, the trans- mitter card. and last for \3 <<o \ Repeat this operation for \7\ then for \4\ The dialing operation is now completed Put, the receiver to the ear and wait for the called party to answer. You should hear in the receiver either the \ringing\ signal, an in- termittent burr-rr-ing sound; indicating that the called party's telephone bell is ringing, or f her J busy* * signal, a rapid buzz-buzz-buzz, indicating that the called party's line is busy. The ringing signal differs materially from the busy signal by being less intense and by occurring at less frequent (about three second) intervals. - If neither the fcusy nor ringing signal is heard and no operator answers, place the receiver on the hook for a full second, then remove it and dial the desired number again. If no signal is audible, again hang up the receiver for a full second. Then dial the repair clerk, 13, and explain as clearly as possible what the trouble is, using another telephone if necessary. • After finishing the conversation or in case the called party doesnotanswer after what you consider a reasonable time, replace the receiver on the hook and the machinery will disconnect your telephone from the one you have called. v , \ . If you have occasion to dial a number a second time or to make another call, be sure to replace the receiver on the hook for a fall second before doing so. If you are Calling from a Party Line Before dialing put the receiver to the ear to make sure the line is not in use. If, while dialing, successive clicks in the receiver' are heard, indicating that some, other party on the line is trying te dial, stop dialing, tell the^ other CAUTION Be sure to look up the telephone number in the new directory before dialing. Be sure to keep the receiver off the hook while dialing. \ Do not touct the receiver hook while dialing, waiting for an answer, or talking.. - Be sure to turn the dial until your finger hits the stop before letting it go. Do not hasten or retard the dial while it is returning to rest Read the-above instructions carefully.
