Prac- tically an lines are maintaining some, degree of service and a few are en- tirely unaffected b'y the strike as yet. Leaders of the marine workers union, however, predict that the strike wifl spread until all harbor shipping i s tied up. Union officials declare that 6,000 harbor workers already are on strike and that 4,000 others will be involved. The strike is the first against the railroads since they were returned to private control by the government. The cause of the strike assigned by union leaders Is the sale of seven lighters by the Erie Railroad, to a private concern and .the refusal of the new owners to grant the men an eight- hour day. _ Although no trouble has attended the strike thus far police reserves are on guard at several ferry landings and at other points along the harbor.
