I am not sure I could do this type of work, but I would like to try it, Would I lose my disability benefits if I take it? A, Under the social security law, disability beneficiaries who work despite severe handi- cap can continue to be paid their monthly benefits while they are testing their ability to work. However, if you should start to work, be sure to notify your social security office. Q., I will be 65 soon and would like tosign up for the medical part of Medicare which covers doctors' services. Is there a charge for this part of Medicare? A, Yes. The premium for this coverage is now $5.30 a month, The rate will be in- creased July 1, 197] to $5.60 for all those enrolled. The Medical part of Medicare is purely voluntary. You should contact your Social Security office 3 months before your 65th birthday to sign up for Medicare, Q. For years I've been told that we should inquire a the Social Security office before retiring., I'd hate to lose time from work to gointoyour office. A. He has recently been offered a job that will pay him $3000 a year, We heard that since we file a joint tax return we can credit $1,500 of his earn- ings to him and $1,500 to me, 'That way neither of us, would lose any socialsecurity checks during the year, Is this true? A, No. Your husband's total earnings will determine the amount of social security ben- efits he'll getduring the year. However, your checks won't be affected by your husband's work 1f you are getting benefits based on your own work record. If you are getting wife's pay- ments, your benefits as well as your husband's would be affected by his earnings. Q. - Iam a single woman in my late thirties, As the result of an accident, I have been severely disabled since I was 10 and havenever worked under social security.
