Clark Brink and Family. might be envied by any police officer, ; Along about 189 0 the H. D. W . Eng- ' lish jewelry store, situated where the Pierce-Reed Co . store now is, was ! burglarized. The village Fathers , then engaged Mr. Holmes as Chief o f Police and night watchman. He 1 proved a brave, capable, conscien- 1 tious officer, never shirking a dis agreeable o r dangerous duty. Dur ing al l the years h e has served, no burglary of any importance ha s been committed in Arcade. I n fact we do no t know of any burglary up to the time the A . L . i-mith store was entered and a considerable amount of clothing taken, and that night Mr Holmes was no t On duty. He was a dread t o evil doers, and they invari ably kept away from Arcade. He was a dead shot with a revolver, a sportsman of merit, and enjoyed hunting and fishing t o th e iuiiest. Many are the stories of hi s bravery in making arrests of dangerous crimi nals. He served as a member of the Ar cade Fire Department fo r a number of years, and was Chief of th e De partment for several years. He was deputy sheriff for many years. He also served as truant officer for the Arcade school for over thirty years. He was a member o f Arcade Bap tist church, a member of China Lodge No. 69 8 I . O. O. F. , an d was widely known throughout-!the county and adjoining counties. Burt Holmes has been identified with the enforcement of la w and order i n Arcade, for s o many years, has been almost constantly upon the streets, and has ever been a good fel low, that he is greatly missed, and his death i s sincerely mourned. He i s survived by on e son, Ray Holmes, one sister, Mrs. James Emery, two brothers, Arthur H. and Carson Holmes of Arcade. One sister, Mrs. Dean L .
