Mary's membership in the Arcade Area Chamber of Commerce was a small measure of her boundless com munity spirit, for she was a one-person chamber of com merce whenever she talked with people about this area She served the Chamber as its secretary and its first woman director, and in 1974 she became the first woman to receive the Chamber's Citizen of the Year Award. One person with whom she worked closely in the Chamber of Commerce was Anson F. Sherman, who stated, \Her devotion to duty was tremendous and her interest in the public was outstanding. Her advice was much sought after, and she was a valued member of the Arcade Free Library Advisory Board and the Pioneer Central School Business Education Ad visory Committee Former Village HistorianHarry S. Douglass noted that, \Mary could foresee difficulties, and used her finesse and diplomacy to prevent them from ever happening \ He also remembered how Mary's ability to express herself was an asset to any group she worked with, and how she was an inspiration for all the young people who knew her Contributions in honor of the life and work of Mary H Erick may be made to Hospice Buffalo, Inc., or to the Mary Erick Memorial at the Arcade United Church of Christ, Congregational A Mary H Erick Secretarial Award is being established at Pioneer Central School, and con tributions for that are being accepted at the Village Office Health Advisory To minimize potential adverse health impact the NYS Department of Health recommends that —You eat no more than one meal ('£ lb) per week of fish from any water in the state — Pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants and young children should not eat fish with elevated levels of mirex, PCBs and / or mercury —You eat no fish taken from the Valatie Kill drainage system south of Route 152 and north of Nassau Lake.
