Erick, Arcade's Village Clerk, Dies Mary H Erick, clerk-treasurer of the Village of Arcade since 1974, died Sunday morning, August 2, 1981 in the Buffalo General Hospital after a long illness Mrs. Erick, 50, and her family lived at 96 Liberty Street. Mary Janet Hackemer was born in Port Huron. Michigan on January 16, 1931 to the late Edward and Janet Ar- chimbault Hackemer Her mother died when Mary was a small child, so she went to Detroit to live with her grand parents, and later to Hamburg, where she was raised by Gladys and the late George Dodge On May 27,1950, she was united in marriage at Hamburg to William H Erick of Angola To them were born three children Thomas of Arcade, Lynda Erick Vaughn of Lexington, Kentucky, and Beth Anne of Arcade In ad dition to her husband, children, and foster mother, Mary is survived by a daughter-in-law, Coleen B Erick, a son-in- law, Randy D Vaughn, two grandsons, Ronald and Mathew Erick, and a brother, Russell Hackemer of Hamburg. A memorial service in celebration of Mary's life was held ' at the Arcade United Church of Christ, Congregational on August 5, conducted by her pastor, the Rev Lisa Thwing, and her former pastors, the Rev John C Wetzel and the Rev John G Ellis, Jr After graduating from Hamburg High School and the YWCA Business School in Buffalo, Mary worked as a secretary in Buffalo and later became secretary to the principal of Lakeshore Central School. After the Ericks moved to Arcade in 1954, her first position was as a legal secretary to the late James A Mason. She also taught adult education courses in shor thand and typing at Arcade Central School, and later served as a secretary to the late J. Milford Newman for several years. Just prior to her appointment as village clerk, she was employed as a secretary to Charles R. Newman. As Mayor John Yansick noted at the memorial service, Mary's broad knowledge and ihe contacts she-established during this time were to prove invaluable to the Village on coun tless occasions after she became clerk During those seven years, she facilitated the completion of several major projects during the administrations of Mayors Bailey and Yansick Though she was a born leader in all of her endeavors, Mary nonetheless saw her role as that of a public servant In the tradition of her predecessors as village clerk, she always worked for perfection, and never hesitated to go out of her way to serve the public One of her co-workers, Nancy Johnson, said last week, \I don't know if people realized how many of other people's problems she took upon her shoulders She always had time if somebody stopped in with a problem. that was her most important thing right Wyoming County Fair August 16-22 Come join in the fun and excitement at the Wyoming County Fair at Pike, New York opening on Sunday August 16 and running through Saturday, August 22 Something for everyone at a real country fair exhibits, demonstrations, parades, rides, horse and cattle shows, tractor pulls and good food They're all at the Wyoming County Fair 1 Opening ceremonies on Sunday August 16 at 1 00 p.m signal the opening of the Fair Speaker at the ceremonies will be Tom Quigley, Warsaw, a member of the Bicentennial Singers A group from the Bicen tennial Singers will provide the mu^ic for the opening. Rev Daniel Kemp, pastor of St Mary's RC Church of Silver Springs will offer the invocation Also par ticipating will be Lisa Williams, 1980 Wyoming County Fair Queen, Peter B Kehl, Fai r Association President, and Albert Marsh, Fai r Association vice-president An Antique Car Show immediately follows the opening ceremonies and at 7-00 p.m the Queen Talent Contest takes place in the barn arena Entertainment in conjunction with the contest will be provided by the Warsaw Bar- bershoppers, a group well- known in Wyoming County. Come on out and join us' then People depended upon her \ Superintendent of Public Works Howard Payne added that, \In all my years in the public sector, I've never known anyone as dedicated to making our community a better place to live than Mary, she would give of herself freely to reach that goal She brought a real air of dignity to our office ' ' Church work always played a large role in the lives of Bill and Mary, who were active in youth work at the Congregational Church in Angola and later became deeply involved in the work of the United Church of Christ here She had served on and chaired the trustees and the 1972 pastoral search committee, and was a charter member and early president of the Mary Hosford Fisher Women's Fellowship Mary had also been a Sunday school teacher, choir member. Forum Class member, and the organizer and leader of numerous dinners and other projects At the time of her death, she was a part of the memorial com mittee, a planner in the renovation of the church kitchen, and the inspiration for the soon-to-be-published cookbook of the Arcade Council of Churches Rev WetzeJ reminded people at the memorial service of \Ihe way Mary was able to convince people to do things for the church or the community with the use of her own example, or some gentle persuasion, or her warm smile and the twinkle in her eyes He also noted the consistency of her love and concern for others, which extended to everyone she met, not just to her family and close friends A friend from church, Shirley Mosher, said, \She radiated such care that, when you were talking to her, you were her only friend To know her was to love her \ Continued on Page 3 THE PAPER IS SOLD ! At this point, the paper is not in a position to have either a full-time editor or a full-time publisher Jeff will continue to teach at Pioneer High School, and the two of us will devote as much time as we can to the newspaper. Admission is free, as usual. Each family is responsible for a dish to pass and their table setting.
