Y.—Wcdimday, August 12,1*70 Issue 5 Fatality On Route 16 \Publishers Corner ROUTE 16—A DEATH TRAP! A station wagon bringing six Felician Sisters home to St John Kanty Convent in Buffalo from a day in Rushford crashed on Route 16, shortly after 9\ 30 Sunday evening, one mile south of Holland, killing one nun, putting three others on the critical list and injuring less seriously the remaining two The car, driven by Sister Mary Luchesia, 56, mother superior of the convent, was traveling north on Route 16 The road is being resurfaced in this area and has about a five inch drop-off between the road proper and the shoulder It seems likely that the car dropped off onto the shoulder Route 16 Directors Meet The directors of the Route 16 Association met at the Lime Lake Hotel Thursday, August 6 to discuss additional ways to promote Route 16 ar a limited access expressway between Route 400 at South Wales and Route 17 Gathering of as many signatures as possible for the Route 16 petition is of the utmost importance, for the Association plans to deliver them personally to Governor Rockefeller early this fall. Need for money to carry on the campaign was stressed. Joseph Reisdorf To Head Pioneer Board The Board of Education of the Pioneer Central School District held its reorganization meeting recently Named to office were Joseph Reisdorf of Arcade, president; William V. McCloskey of Arcade, vice president, Verne D. Goodemote of Chaffee, clerk, and Jane Lis of Machias, collector. Each will serve for the term of one year and in attempting to get back onto the road, the driver over-corrected, lost control and the car veered off the right side of the road, took out two guard posts and careened down into a gully and head-on into an embank ment. Dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital was Sister Mary Beata, CSSF, 72, of St John Kanty Convent, 82 Brownell St Admitted to Mercy Hospital were - Sister Mary Luchesia, S6. the driver, in serious condition in Mobile Home Burns The mobile home of Mr and Mrs William Larimer on Curriers Road was totally destroyed by fire last Tuesday A fuel tank exploded while being repaired, igniting the rear of the structure The building was completely enveloped in flames when the Chaffee Fire Company and the Arcade Fire Department arrived Joseph Mahiques, Mrs Larimer's father, who had been repairing the tank, was burned on the hands and face. He was rushed to Chaffee Memorial Hospital by the Chaffee-Sardinia ambulance for treatment and released that evening. The Larimer family was home at the time, but managed to escape without injury, though Mrs. Larimer was thrown across the room by the force of the explosion. They had moved into the house only two months ago Bliss Rescue Squad Wins At Tournament The Bliss Rescue Squad competed in tournament of the B division at the recent convention held in Perry, and won two second place plaques, a first place plaque and a first place trophy the intensive care unit with chest injuries and multiple cuts and bruises. Sister Mary Redempta, 64, in critical condition with head and chest injuries, fractured left arm and possible internal injuries Sister Mary Jessica, 23, in fair condition with multiple bruises Sister Mary Roseanne, 23, in serious condition with head injuries,, possible internal injuries and multiple bruises Sister* Lucianne, 23, in fair condition with bruises On Sunday evening Route 16 claimed another life when Sister Mary Beata died in an accident near Holland and five other nuns were injured It is true that this accident may be attributed to the resurfacing being done to 16 at this time for there is a dangerous drop-off from the paved surface to the shoulder which seemingly caused this accident In fairness to the contractor and to (In state who are doing this work i( should be no(cd that barrels spaced about 100 feel apart on the shoulder, warn drivers of the dangerous condition I believe, however, that the center line markings, broken white lines, single and double yellow lines should be applied immediately The barrels have a tendancy to make the driver take the center of the road and endanger oncoming traffic Trouble At The Cattaraugus Infirmary! Information has been laid before Justice Vincent Farrcll of Machias alleging that Frank Peters, commissioner of welfare for Cattaraugus County assaulted Otto Achtzigcr, administrator of the Cattaraugus County Infirmary on Monday The alleged incident took place outside of Mr Peters' office in the infirmary and was an outgrowth of Mr Peters' dismissal of Mr Acht?iger as administrator of the infirmary Allegedly, Mr Peters struck and then kicked Mr Achtziger without provocation State Police were called in to calm the disturbance The purpose ol this article is to make clear my belief that this resurfacing and installation of hard-surfaced shoulders wdl do little, it any, good in making Route 16 J safe road The many blind grades will still remain Sharp turns will still cause drivers to cross the center line The smoother surface will cause drivers to move dlong at higher speeds and soon Route 400 will be dumping thousands more cars onto I 6 Route 16 is a good secondary road and should remain this way A new limited access expressway paralleling 16 but not a part of it is the only sensible answer Do your part to get it Write your legislators and sign the Route 16 Petition if you haven't already done so It may be you or a member of your family that will be thi next vie tun C-S KiwaniansShow Their Good Fellowship Tuesday was the day for the Chaffee-Sardinia Kiwanis annual family picnic held at the Sardinia Park This year they invited 30 children from the West Seneca State School to be their guests. These children are retarded and have very few \fun\ days like this The children arrived by bus about I o'clock and spent the afternoon playing games and swimming in the fine pool Kiwanis gave to the town They were treated to an excellent supper and left for the school tired but happy Congratulation Kiwanians Patio Beautification Begun By Key Club Members of the Pioneer Central Key Club (1960-70) were busy recently planting trees in the patio at the Yorkshire Building of the district Pictured from left, standing. are Jeff Gartley.
