Y.—Wednesday, June 24, 1970 Issue 50 Seek 20,000 Signatures As Route 16 Political Lever Publisher's Corner School Referendum Scheduled On June 30 At Holland Residents of the Holland Central School District will go to the polls on Tuesday, June 30, to vote on the proposed new middle school The hours of voting will be from 2 to 9 o'clock and voting will be conducted in the high school building The cost of the new building, equipment and the development of athletic funds will not exceed $2,250,000 At the present time both the high school and the grade buildings are badly overcrowded and the enrollment will increase each year Four portable buildings are currently being used and two more portables will be required when school opens in September Also two basement rooms are now being used in the high school building The proposed new middle school will house grades five through eight and will have a pupil capacity of 720 It is anticipated that it will take care of enrollment increases for several years to come The middle school type of school organization is relatively new and growing rapidly in popularity Several Erie County districts are now operating middle schools with success Delevan Man Jailed Neal P. Green Jr, 24, of McKinstry Rd is in Cattaraugus County Jail at Little Valley on charges of reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and harassment When Trooper Frank Ryan of Franklinvllle attempted to serve a warrant for harassment sworn out by Green's wife, Mary, Green reached into a pickup truck, grabbed a shotgun, loaded it, and ordered Trooper Ryan off the property. He then took a rifle from the truck and with shotgun and rifle barricaded himself in the house and dared PETITIONS will be used to bombard Albany in the battle to convert Route 16 Into a four-lane limited access highway between South Wiles and Olean. Here part of the 20,000 petitions are held by principals By Ed Hogan Olean Times Herald The publisher of the weekly newspaper in Arcade Thursday was elected president of the Route 16 Association and promptly sparked a campaign to get 20,000 signatures as a strong political lever to win construction of the north-south expressway from South Wales to Maplehurst Leibee Wheeler, the president of the Buffalo Aeronautical Corp who purchased the Tn-County Tunes two years ago, called for 100 per cent backing of all citizens in promoting the 42-mile extension of the Aurora Expressway (Rt 400) to link with the Southern Tier Expressway, eight miles north of Olean The petitions, in the form of a brochure pointing out the dangers and inconvenience of the existing two-lane Route 16 and the virtues of a modern limited access expressway and listing the names and addresses of the governor, state senators and assemblymen and state department of Transportation, were presented to directors and members to carry back to their communities \We would like to have these signed in the next two weeks if possible,\ Mr. Wheeler urged, \telling our senators and assemblymen of our need Route 16 holds the greatest economic (Continued on page twelve) Trooper Ryan to arrest him. We act as a sounding board for your views We publicize projects which are being considered for our area and urge you to take action for or against them, and by publishing public opinion, we help you to obtain them or prevent them Through your merchants advertisements we show you the best buys in your locality In all these ways we are vital to you Now we need your subscriptions and your advertisements Landmark Burns The 70 year old farmhouse built by Demetrius (\Dim\) Bray and now belonging to his son, Arthur Bray on Genesee Road near Rte 98 was totally destroyed by fire Saturday at about 1 30 p.m High winds and the ferocity of the flames made the task of saving the house an impossibility Arcade and Yorkshire Fire Companies did yeoman service in trying to save the landmark Mr Bray has been in a nursing home and the house has been vacant for the past five years See pictures on page I 2 A Mishap Pictured above, left to right, are Mark Schnitzler, Rural Carrier. On Friday, June 19, 1970, Postmaster H James Hyland presented Safe Driver Awards to three employees of the Arcade Post Office The three awards represented a combined total of 75 years and approximately 1 million miles of accident free driving while working for the Post Office Gilbert L. Gibbon, City Carrier, received an 11 year award, Mark L. Schnitzler, rural Carrier, a 24 year award, and Horton A. Stockin, Rural Carrier, a 40 year award In recognition of his 40 years i-County Times Photo Gilbert Gibbon, City Carrier, H. James Hyland, Postmaster, Mr. Stockin, of accident free driving and his 45 years of service to the Arcade Community, Mr. Stockin also was presented with \Superior Accomplishment Award\ Certificate and lapel button together with a tax free check in the amount of J 150.00 Postmaster Hyland also noted that the Arcade Post Office was observing its second anniversary of accident-free operation The last accident of any kind reported was on June 19, 1968, which was a dog bite suffered by a city carrier while delivenng mail. The Postmaster observed that dog bites are considered accidental injuries although it appears, in most cases, that it was intentional on the part of the dog Supervisor C G Knight, Mayor R J Thomas, Ward Mayer, Lee Wishing and Robert Brass representing the Arcade Area Chamber of Commerce were present during the presentations and extended congratulations and best wishes to the recipients of the awards as well as the other employees of the Arcade Post Office for their fine record.
