This recent fire at Freedom brought out the Freedom and Arcade fire departments at a substantial cost to the volunteer firemen in time and to the fire companies in fuel and wear and tear on their equipment Millions of dollars in damage is caused annually by these fires, which, for the most part, are caused by human carelessness and ignorance Anyone wishing to burn rubbish should be sure to have pails of water and a broom next to them before they light the first match No fire should be started if a breeze is blowing. No fire should be left unattended Don't hesitate to call the Fire Department if the fire seems to be getting out of hand Loss of property, live stock and even human lives can be the penalty for carelessness. To Revitalize Arcade Historical Society Plans are in the making to revive the Arcade Sesquicentennial Historical Society and reorganize it under the name of \Arcade Historical Society \ For this purpose, a public meeting will be held at the Municipal Building Monday, May 18 at 8 p m Each club and organization m Arcade is urged to send representatives to this meeting. Anson Sherman Named To Park Board Governor Rockefeller last week announced he had sent to the Senate for confirmation the nomination of Anson F Sherman of Arcade and the renomination of Robert E Waters of Medina to the Genesee State Park Commission Mr Sherman, president of the Citizens Central Bank of Arcade, will serve a term expiring November 11, 1975, succeeding Hugh McM Russ, Sr , of Portageville, who had retired Mr Waters' term expires on April 17, 1977 The positions are unsalaried Buffalo Supt. Of Schools Addresses Cattaraugus Co. Group Superintendent of Buffalo Schools, Joseph Manch, was the guest speaker at the Cattaraugus County School Boards Association meeting held at Pioneer Central School Thursday evening, April 23 The president of the organization, Clans Persons, was in charge of the program Advising school officials to {Continued on page twelve) Accident At 16 And Genesee Sunday evening at about 8 30 a two car accident at Route 16 and Genesee Rd. did extensive damage to both vehicles but caused no personal injuries. A car driven by Sylvia Havens, age 24, of 4812 North Boston Rd Hamburg, northbound on Route 16 was about to turn left into Genesee Road The second car driven by Henry Raps, age 64 of 37 Maryann Terrace, Buffalo started to pass and struck the first car Mr Raps received a summons for interfering with safe operation Tri-County Timet Photo Harry Hermann Named New Holland Planning Board Chairman The Town Board of Holland has appointed Harry Herrmann chairman of the Planning Board He will succeed Mrs. Carol Crook, who recently submitted her resignation Mr. Herrmann served as supervisor of the Town prior to being transferred to Boston, Mass. about a year and a half ago by the Texaco Co by which he is employed He recently returned to Holland Board Takes Action Re D-M Building, Cafeteria Deficit Pioneer Central Business Administrator C Eugene Edwards reports that a presentation has been made by himself and Elementary Principal Anthony Faso to the Board of Education about the estimated cost of a cinder block wall to divide the former agriculture and former industrial arts rooms at D-M to provide for the expected increased enrollment for the 1970-71 school year Board action indicated the immediate proceeding on the room division In other action, the board heard a report from Mrs. Bowers, cafeteria manager, indicating that with the increased cost of foods and supplies, the cafeteria is operating at a deficit and that bills have to be held over an additional month or else paid by a temporary loan obtained from the general fund. The board does not wish to hold bills over from suppliers for any additional length of time and a loan in the amount of $10,000 was approved to the cafeteria fund Arcade Village Requests Electric Rate Change The Village of Arcade has filed a new commercial electric rate with the New York State Power Authority, to become effective on June 1, 1970 The new rate is applicable to so-called \all-electric\ commercial users who use electricity exclusivly for space heating, air conditioning, water heating, and other purposes. It is similar to the all-electric residential rate adopted in 1967 which provides for \i per kwhr electricity for usage in excess of 500 kilowatt-hours per month According to Village authorities, the new rate is being offered to provide a suitable alternate heating source for existing steam users, who may be faced with space heating conversions if the uptown steam heating system is abandoned The new rate will also apply to other existing or new commercial establishments who qualify as \all-electric it was said Customers of the Arcade electric utility continue to enjoy the lowest electric rates in the area, according to Superirltendent of Public Works Luke F Sharon Mr Sharon pointed out that Arcade residential users pay $7 85 for 500 kwhr which will cost New York State Electric & Gas customers S14 11 under their recently filed rate The Arcade all-electric user pays $12.85 for 1.000 kwhr as compared to the NYSE&G charge oi $24 11 for 1,000 kwhr, it was reported Electric Trouble Affects Area Homes, Industrial Plants Trouble on the 115,000 volt Niagara Mohawk line between Gardenville and Olean darkened homes and shut down industrial plants in the Arcade area for about 18 minutes last Thursday morrung. The nature of the trouble was not announced, but it was reportedly on one of the two Gardenville-Olean high voltage circuits just outside the Gardenville substation Arcade Superintendent of Public Works Luke F Sharon explained that electricity for the Arcade municipal electric department is \wheeled\ from Niagara Falls to Arcade over Niagara Mohawk lines, under a contract between Niagara Mohawk and the New York State Power Authority The wheeling charges amount to about $8,000 per month, according to Mr Sharon John C.
