It will bring great enjoyment to many thousands. It will mean tragedy for others. As long as people are careless and thoughtless, there wUl be drouuiings. The Sheriff’s Department hope that their repeated appeals for caution and common sense will be heeded so that needless loss o^ life can be prevented. Once again the simplfe rules of safety are listed for swim- mdts and nom-swimmers. They are: 1. Do your swimming and bathing preferably where there are lifeguards on duty. 2. Don’t swim or bathe alone. 3. Don’t go into unfamiliar waters—there may be treach erous holes or sudden dropoffs. 4. Don’t go beyond a depth at which you can easily touch bottom. 5. Dont dive unless you are certain that there is suffi cient depth—and make sure ther^ are no sunken logs or other Mdden obstructions. 6. Dont’ go into the water until at least ^ hour after you ^ v e eaten. 7. Don’t go out in a boat unless you can swim—and don’t take non-swimmers with you. 8. Don’t stand up in a boat. 9. Get off the water if a storm is approaching—particu larly an electric storm. 10. Avoid horseplay in and on the water. To help us recreate Eden in our own backyards, science hat given us weapons to fight off the aphis and the thrip, the Japanese beetle, the dandelion and the purslane. Unfortunately some of these weapons are two-edged swords— as dangerous to people as to their garden enemies. . Records show that cases of pois oning from garden preparatioi are on the increase although man ufacturers warn us, writers of' “green thumb” advice warn us, and doctors warn us. It should be obvious that any chemical strong enough to kill poison ivy could harm a human being or a pet. Too many treat i these powerful materials as if stage rocket.
