Uncle Eddie's \Children\ Ham Radio Operators Assist Meath Fund Each year before Christ- mas, Eddie Meath, popular morning personality can WHEC radio, asks his listeners to send in their extra pennies to aid a furd he has established to buy toys for unfortunate hospitalized children in the Rochester area. His fund is absolutely voluntary, depend- ing entirely on his Hsteners to see that any contributions to the fund are sent in or delivered to the station. .\ io 1985, mémbers of the Rochester Amateur fradio Association decided to help Eddie enlarge the fund. Ca a Sunday afterncon that year, Eddio Meath and Eddie Dunn (formerly with WHEC, now a special assistant to Congressman Horton), went on the alr with a special program asking listoners who had con- tributions to call them on the telephone. Both Eddies talked to the callers, took names and ad- dresses and thanked them for their generosity. Amateur radio operators, through their radio networks, dispatched their members to pick up the contributions from the listeners who had called in. In 1965, the radto amateurs collected 66,300 pennies. In 1986, they did a ropoat effort collecting $6,845 pennies for a gramd total of 123,145 pennies -- $1,231.45.
