Consciously or Otherwise, this island and its resort hotels, H ours was typical, dosn't try to imitate the grandiose resorts of the main- land. They rely on the fact that pature was in no mood to be upstaged when itcreated the Islands. For our taste they couldn't have used better judgement. *% % % The vegetaton on this island is beautiful beyond the main- lander's dreams. For in- stance, golfers in our section of New York State are delighted when they're playing a strange course and they come upon a partcularly lovely Hlac bush or forsythia or crabapple, and enjoy the game the more for it. Here, unless you're @ botanist, you can't identify the foliage and the only way to describe it is that some of the blossoms have the unreal beauty of flowers in a Japanese screen patnting. One blossom was pure white with a gold center. This we found was a Plumeria blossom. They are so exquisite some could pass for a silky imita- tion flower. At another spot along the way, three bushes were growing side by side. \ One bad - a large - tangerine blossom, another a blue one another a vivid green. This sort of postural wonder popss up everywhere. |. x *% * The Milly pords near the hotel were so crammed full of pink, biue, white and yellow water lites you couln't put your bard in without touching one. They're easily twice the size of ours. Some of them, the blues in particular, would brighten up a room all by themselves. Fish ponds abound and they're stocked with great, complacent goldfish thal look as though they'd lHved well since minnowhood. At the Kaual Surf where we stayed, they even had white fish, pure white, and everyone fed them. Sinco the breakfast buffet was served only a stone's throw away, they'd acquired a taste for sour dough bread and Danish pastry equaled only by the chef's. We expected, because of the exotic surroundings, to see similar extravagances - in birds, About all we saw were the Mynah bird-a ooisy fellos noted for His abflity to talk when trained and no claimant to - beauty--a species o cardizal with caly his hesd red, and a species of canary. There were myriads ol modest sparrows and wild pigions who tfreqzented the open dining rooms; all but landing on the tables while we were eating. To our un- practised eyes they ° fooked better than anything we'd seen on television,\ - gince we were with a group working on the \Smile\ girl prumoflm and since Jantzen had . brought Carky Carroll, top U.S. surfer with them, we were able to watch the look of reverence that appeared on the beach boys faces as they recognized him. x * * The Smile girls, incident- ally,, included about 30 or so enchanting, slim young things chosen from throughout the United States for their smiles. All are awarded college scholarships and many go on to do national advertising for the companies sponsoring the promotion; Eastman Kodak, Coca-Cola, Pontlec, United Airiines - and, of course, Jantzen. Along with the girls, came the representatives of stores from their cittes. Present - was the likeable AlMce Johnson of Sibley's. The latter's presence gave us a chance to talk about Sibley's apple pie, against a back- ground of palm trees and crashing surf. *% %o # Tom Brown, fullback for the Philadelphia Eagles, was also with our group; &a nice boy with the potentfal petter and easy manner of snentertainer. He told about being turned down for a TV role because he wasn't darkskinned enough for the Negro they plcured in the role. H6 spent a couple of afternoons sunbathing on the Surf beach, boping, as he arplained, to bat righ’kcomr to satisfy somebody. Later we met Tennesee Ernie Ford for a luncheon in Honolulu. - Even the most countryfiled stars can become irritable or disappointing Hf they're confronted with too much public. Thankfully, Ford was neither,. He was com- fortable to Obe with; unmistakably Tennesee Ernie in voice and looks and, at the time, filled with contrition over the fact that he was in Hawali while his older son was in the hospital. He had come down with proumonia, and Ford felt re- sponsible because instead of taking him in for a shot at the first chest-rattling cough he'd let the boy talk him out of It. When they finally did get to a doctor, he was shipped right off to the hos- pital. nal *. _ * His younger son was there, filled with sibling glee because be got his picture taken with Kodak's Kathy Caseilton, (*Gir]l With The Most Photo- gentc Smile'\) in place of his older brother. We caught ourselves time ard again thirkirg that the guiter~-strumming beach boys and the surft-worshipers were performing for our berfefit. It's - so - doubt - encocraged by the management, but we tourtsts have to learn that Hawalisns were singing and surfing long before we came tinto the picture. This makes - a sweet mournful sound that can be heard at quite a distance. This pro- cedure was followed in the ear ly days of the Islands to let the fishermen - and - woodsmen know that the diner hour bad come. The boys keep the conch shell in action off and on for about 15 minutes. Then the outrigger is beached at a different point, and all three climb out and kept ready for the occasion They take of like runners before the days of other loco- motion and race from one end of the beach to the other, touchirg their torches to open gas-filled post torches along the way. The latter ignite immediately and pretty soon the way along the beach and along most of the walkways are Muminated by torchlight. x -- * _ * The outrigger caroe is un- mistakable, - by the way, because of - the - balance structure that juts out from one side and gives It It's name. This structure is made up of the Ama, which are the arms or parts that connect the Aku to the canoe proper. The Aku 1s the part that actually floats in the water. If you have an opportunity to ride in an outrigger, take it. But only H you have professionals paddling. This applies, doubtless, to sea experiences only where you have big waves. We'd have hited -to have had Gunman! paddling the day we \Tent oul. The beach boys, with much scrambling to get the main- larders properly seated according to weight, pushed off and paddled furlously to get past the big beach waves. Since this is basically - a canoe, It wouldn't hold up too well egainst a large wave, and mg beach boys are curiaus as to whether or not you can swim before they take you out. Once in calm waters we went scooting along nicely , but the real thrill is riding the waves like a surfboard. The beach boys found some good size waves out a distance from the shore and followed the same pattern as If they were riding a surfboard. It does have a new and modern shopping center, though. Generally a bus will pick up church-goers, but some denominations have very early services and you need to know about It the night before to make It. If the church we attended is typical, the experience is more than just keeping your faith on Sunday. - Hawaiians love to give volce to song, and they seng hymns we had only half- appreciated before, to the accompaniment of a electric guitar.
