By Denise Soebbing When Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Cariello proudly claim that their family \gets up with the birds each morning,\ they mean exactly what they're saying. And they mean it in a very special way. For over a week now the Cartello family has become devoted bird-watchers in their own backyard at 467 Alfonso Dr. The fun all began about 10 days ago, when the cight year old Cartello twins, Debbie and Susan, found a tiny bird that apparently had fallen out of Its nest or else was learning how to fly and fust couldn't make the upward trip home to Its nest. So they asked their mother if they could bring the little bird home ard care for It until it was able to fly. Mrs. Cariello didn't want the bird to @t burt so she brought It bome. Two days later the twins discovered anther baby bird in the same pridicament aad carefully carried him home too. Then the excitment and enthusiasm dmbled an d re-doubled. When Debbie and Susan saw the two little birds together they noticed that they were identical and promptly decided that the birds must be twins too. Because one is a bit bigger, they think it must be the \boy bird'' and the cther one is his \twin sister,\ and so the Carlellos named their new set of twins Petle and o eo oe rather unusual cage for Tweetie and Petic. A sew addition to their backyard is a large luggage carrier turned upside down on the ground. Tweetle and Petle are safe inside and yet free to fly and hop in and out of the side openings. They soon got over their initial \ stage fright\ and now they are loudly peeping exhibitlonists. The roof of the luggage carrier has become their new flying platform where they '\'perform\ for the neighbor- bood youngsters. The birds also use their new roof as a sun deck where Mrs. Cartello sprays them with the hose and even mama bird files down to m into the act. Mum: bird is a very watch- ful and attentive mother. According to Mrs. Cartello, the mother feeds her twins round-the-clock with little bugs and beetles ard, of course, worms. Randy Cari- ello, 3, is fascinated watching the mams bird put the worms right into their little beaks. Mrs. Cariello also bought some wild bird seed but says that already they are getting . If any strangers come into the back yard, she Immediately swoops down and tries to frighten them away. Early one morning (sbout 5 a.m.) a neighborhood cat . hopped up onto the roof of the cage and started poking and pawing at the openings. Mama bird anxiously flew back and forth outside the Carlello's bedroom window peeping as loudly as possible and finally woke them up. By the time the Carlellos had chased the cat away, the shy father bird arrived to make sure his little ones were unharmed. Judging by their grayish, brown coloring and \black mask'' markings and mostly because of their \beautiful songs,\ the Carlellos think they are hosts to a family of moeckingbirds. Along with Randy and the twins, the other two Cartello boys, Sam 13 and David 10, especially enjoy marking the birds' flying progress. T weetle ard Petie are growing quickly and are ready now to fly away. But they seem as reluctant to leave their ''mew family' as the family is to let them go. One day Petie even made a solo flight over the roof to the front yard but came right back again. The Cartellos plan to let Tweetle and Petle go this week, but they are hopeful that this special family of mockingbird; will return to visit for: some -- seed, for a bath under the bose, and to \show off\\ their flying skills.
