At least that's how it was on the \Star Trek\ TV show in the late 1960s. Although the new film is very re- spectiful of the \Star Trek\ legend and lore, it's not afraid to play with the old conventions and give them new jwists. n the new film, the acting is gen- -|-Bring Back |- But if you paid close attention to that program, you know that its central concern was the emotional lives of its characters. People are people, \Star Trek\ said, and even alien humanoids may share in their humanity. That point was largely over- looked by the first \Star Trek\ movie, released in 1979. Although it was amusing to see the old crew assembled for the film and to mar- vel at the facelift given the starship Enterprise, the movie lacked an emotional texture and an imagina- tive pJot to engage the emotions. After a while, it became a cosmic and nostalgic drag But don't give up on the \Star Trek\ legend. \Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is a clever, exciting movie that grabs you right from the start by involving you in the con- flicts and aspirations of its charac- ters. We encounter Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) - former captain of the Enterprise - on his birthday. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) - the Vulcan who used to be his first officer - is now a teacher of starship techniques. He offers Kirk a copy of \A Tale of Two Cities\ as a birthday gift. Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley), Kirk's old medical officer, gives him a pair of eyeglasses. Kirk is allergic to newfangled vision cor- rectors, so he's forced to wear the reading glasses. It's a telling detail: warm, whimsical, personal. The movie's full of such small gestures that recall the characters to life. , Directed by Nicholas Meyer and written by Jack B. Sowards and Harve Bennett, the movie's got a clever plot that's also very touch ing. In this way, \Star Trek II\ re- sembles the other movie that Meyer erally much more natural and re- laxed than it was on the television series. Most of the melodramatics are subdued, most of the situations lightened by humor. The special ef- fects are at the service of the plot (although there's nothing especially spectacular to them). A new character, Lt. Saavik (Kirstie Alley), is introduced. She's a-female Vulcan, and the off-handed way she enters the plot works quite well. Another new character, Kirk's illegitimate son (Merritt Butrick), recalls the heavy posturing of the old TV show and is the film's weak- est aspect. Old friends on hand include Seot- ty (James Doohan), Chekbv (Wal- ter Koenig), Sulu (George Takei) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) The villain is Khan (Ricardo Montal- ban), a superbeing revived from a TV episode. . As has been Widely rumored, Spock dies in this film, and a mov- ing death it is. But it's an ambigu- ous demise. \I like to think that there are always possibilities,\ he's quoted as saying. Anyway, the vic- tory over the evil Khan really be- longs to Spock. Kirk triumphs be- cause he manages to remain logical and unemotional, as Spock taught him, while Khan loses his head. But Kirk has the last word. He realizes that for all Spock's clever- ness, the Vulcan was essentially very human. That's also the magic of \Star Trek IL\ It's a clever mov- ie, and just human enough to make its cleverness pay off. Over Water.\ . As the German director stood on the Stage of Shea's Buffalo Theater and answered questions about the mov- ie, he was assured but rather sad. This was not an easy film for him to make, he said. Watching it again left him troubled. It was easy to understand why. \Lightning Over Water' is an un- usual, very personal documentary about how a friend of his died of cancer. To make a film about a per- sqn‘s approach to death while that person is still alive would seem to require a peculiar mixture of com- passion and cold-bloodedness. The viewer can't help suspecting that the dying man was somehow taken advantage of, that his death was in some way exploited by the filmmak- er. > The case of \Lightning Over Wa- ter\ - which is back in the Bulfalo area, at the Evans Art Theater -- is a very special one, though: In this case, the cancer victim was himself a movie director, a man who knew ing a movie involves. Among other movies, Nicholas Ray directed ''They Live By Night,\ \In a Lonely Place' (with Humphrey Bogart) and \Johnny Guitar.\ And then there's his movie that will live fo- rever: \Rebel Without a Cause\ starring James Dean. In fact, Bay is listed along with Wenders as a co-director of \Light- ning Over Water.\ So if Wenders JOLLY ROGER | 1095 HARLEM Ow Cumton) 822-8478 TODAY'S SPECIAL 6 oz. N.Y. In the film, Ray writes his own epi- taph and virtually presides at his own wake. The movie is a collage of varying approaches. Some of it is actual do- cumentary footage: Ray speaking at Vassar College, Ray discussing . death from his hospital bed. Some of it is pure fantasy: clips from Ray's 1952 movie, 'The Lusty Men' and of his last, unfinished work, ''We Can't Go HOme Again.\ Some of it falls mid-way between fact and fantasy, such as the scenes about how the \Lightning Over Wa- ter\ project got off the ground, scenes that Ray and Wenders re- staged after they'd already lived t‘hmugh them. A variety of techniques were used in making this movie, everything from the scratchy pale look of a hand-held camera. to the rich opu- lence of polished cinematography. The film shuttles rapidly between styles and levels of reality, lending the mood a certain vitality. Finally, though, the grimmess of the subject ~geis away from the directors and partially sabotages their intentions.
