Lloyd Graham's Perspective Radiation Tied to 3% of U.S. Cancer Cases ONE OF THE most discon- certing things that can happen to any cause rider or picket- line walker is to have his pre- conceived ideas confused by facts. Therefore, anyone who is hellbent on wiping out gu- clear power plants or prevent- ing their development proba- bly should read no farther, They are about to be con- fronted by scientific facts se- lected from the writings of Seymour Jablon, a sclentist of impeccable authority and a member of the prestigious Na- tional Academy of Sciences, a part of the National Research _ ~Council. CCC MB JABLON recently read a paper before a group of scientists'in New York City in which he discussed in some depth \The Contribution of Tonizing Radiation to Cancer Mortality in the United This is from his opening statement:-*'ft -is, perhaps, fronic, that despite this knowl- edge (meaning the known ef- fects of large doses of fonizing radiation from studies of sur- vivors in Hiroshima and Naga- saki, persons who have re- ceived therapeutic or repeated diagnostic X-rays, and from laboratry experimentation) and in the face of widespread public concern and apprehen- sion about radiation-induced cancer, actually-only-a-very small part of the cancer bur- den which afflicts humanity may be attibutable to radia- tion - less than 3 percent.\ Ionizing radiation is any atomic particle or frequency of electromagnetic radiation which is capable of causing ions, or free radicals, in a material through which it passes. Ionizing radiation does this by expelling an electron from its orbit and leaving be- hind a charged particle, or fon. THIS IONIZING radiation is measured for purposes of safe- ty standards by a unit called the Rem, Roentgen equivalent man. Current standards allow for an exposure of up to five Rems per year for workers over age 18. ~--onizing-radiation-has-been on the occurrence 0 recognized for its cancer-caus- ing qualities for more T0 years. The famous Madame Curie suffered an lonizing burn on her hand, perhaps the first known victim. SAVE UP TO 400%. ON A MACHINE THAT -DEMONSTRATED WHAT IT CAN D * MODEL AND DEMONSTRATOR SALE. DUCKING THE scientific verbiage, we go back to Mr. Jablon's reference to cancer attributable to radiation as 'less than 3 percent. He adds that \half of this hypothetical burden is caused by radiation that we cannot do anything about - that which results from patural background. It is, of course, necessary to re- duce radiation exposures where this can be done without paying an exorbitant price.\ Radiation, he said, is not a promising target. ''The impact of fonizing ra- cancer depends upon the dose received and on the effective- ness per rem for cancer induc- tion.\ He referred to doses from various sources: X-rays, gamma rays, alpha particles, and neutrons. Mr. Jablon presented a ta- ble of \Hife-time risks per rem for solid tumors by site. Risk of fatal cancer is estimated at 10 per million persons-rems for thyroid cancer, 50 for breast cancer in women, 25 to 50 for lung cancer, 10 to 15 each for stomach, liver, and colon can- cer, and 2 to 5 each per million persons-rems for bone, eso- phagus, small intestine, uri- nary bladder, pancreas, and lymphatic tissue. IN ANOTHER table, Mr. Ja- blon gave estimates of radia- tion exposure to the U.S. gen- eral population, 1978. STAPLETON: I love my wife very much. She is a beautiful and talented girl. They are good, churchgoing women, but even their church comes in for critlclsm-each-Sunday:-They don't like the choir leader, the hytons we sing, and the casual dress of the young people. If I take them out to dinner I am embarrassed because the food is all wrong and the service bad, What can a mere man do? TOM E. DEAR TOM: Complaining is a clear manifestation of the habit of ingratitude. We forget that the Scripture advises, ''In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you\ (I Thessalonians 5:18).\ You are going to have to lead the way. Ask your wife to join you each morning, say at breakfast, in naming all the tymgs you both have to be thankful for. There is a sinister appeal in negativism, so if she resorts to it be frank and say, \Honey I notice you have begun to look on the negative side of things like your mother does.
