Characterized by York as \very professionaJ,\ the burg- lars cut their way through the roof of the bank, which is located in Livingston Plaza on Route 20A, sometime late last Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. They left through a rear door after gaining entry into the bank's main vault, according to York. The investigation is a coordinated effort involving the FBI, state police, Genesco vil- lage police and the Sheriffs Department. Police used tracking dogs and helicopters to search the area. It is believed that the thieves had access to a getaway car. The burglary was dis- covered at about 6 a.m. when a custodian arrived to clean the bank. A wooden ladder, appar- ently used by the burglars, was found inside the bank. York said a \trouble\ alarm signal was received at sheriffs headquarters at 5: 15 a.m. An external check of the building was made, but nothing appeared to be amiss. Police believe the thieves had already' made their departure. Trouble alarms indicate an equipment failure and are relatively commonplace, York said. A burglar alarm, had it been received, would have been more agressively pursued, he explained. Police are investigating whether this burglary was com- mitted by the same people who cut their way into the Canan- daigua National Bank & Trust Co. branch in Farmington two months ago. Until last week's heist in Geneseo, Livonia was the scene of the largest bank robbery in the county. The 1980 robbery of the former Security Trust Company, in which $31,950 was laken, remains unsolved. CONSTRUCTION STARTS NOV. 4 FOR IMAGING SCIENCE CENTER Rochester Institute of Technology will have a ground- breaking ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 4, for its new $8.4 million Center for Imaging Science. When completed, the facility will provide the most comprehensive academic center in North America for the study of imaging science. \RIT is destined to be the undisputed leader in the emerging technology of imaging science, a field that will influence much--if not most--of this country's industrial growth in the future,\ said RIT President M. Richard Rose. RIT has been poised to become the leader in this field because of its national prominence in a range of traditional programs that are the elements of imaging science. Those programs include photographic science, printing, computer scien~e and engineering, the graphic arts and the nation's only undergraduate degree program in microelectronics. Imaging science is the study of the principles governing how images are perceived, recorded and transmitted. With the growth of established fields such as photography and the emergence' of digital and electronic imaging, the demand for trained scientists has become vital in government and industry. The fOlir-story building, scheduled to be completed in 1989, will house six classrooms, a lecture hall, 55 offices, research facilities and several laboratories including labs in photographic chemistry, digital imaging, holography, emulsion coating and optics. The Munsell Color Science Laboratory and the Remote Sensing Laboratory also will be located there. \The new facility will allow us to continue and expand dramatically' our research and development,\ said Dr. Rodney Shaw, director of RIT's Center for Imaging Science. \We want to be able to do more contract research and provide facilities for visiting scholars from around the world.\ The \Great Pumpkin Patch\ is always a popular feaure at the Genesee Valley Hunt Race Meet.
