~--------~- --~'----~--~------- ----~------~.----------------, October 15, 1987 Ska-Hase-Ga-O Chapter DAR Holds Oct. Meeting Ska-has-ga-o Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution mem- bers met on Oct 8 at the home of Mrs. Robert Mallory. Dessert was served preceeding their regular meeting which was conducted by the Regent, Mrs. Dean Gladding. A part of the regular business meeting was devoted to a report of the recent State Conference held in Albany Sept. 22-25. Those attending were Mrs. Frank Knop, Mrs. Robert Mallory and Mrs. Whitney Hoose, all of whom found the meetings informative and in- spiring. Resolutions were passed by the State Organi7.ation on many important issues of community concern including those on the milk cartels vs. free enterprise, water additive legis- lation, increasing jury pay, detente, and English usc on election ballots. Members were urged to contact their legislators on these issues. Mrs. Raymond Nichols, National Defense Chairman, used in her report an article from the Nntional Defender by TIlOmse Di Bacco denouncing the 1968 law which proclaimed that holidays be moved to the most convenient Eastnlan Opera Theatre to Visit HF-L 'nlC Eastman Opera Theater of the Eastman School of Music will visit Honeoye Falls-Lima School District Friday (Oct. 16) for two perfor- mances of the musiCal, \Reach- ing for the Moon\ by George and Ira Gershwin. Under the direction of Richard Pearlman, scenes from the show will be presented in the District Auditorium at 9:40 a.m. and 11:15a.m. Pearlman will talk brief- ly about the Gershwins' music. Then the actors will introduce themselves in character, tell the story and perform songs as the songs fit the story. \Reaching for the Moon\ is a musical set in LQndon, England, in 1937. The musical introduced such songs as \Our Love Is Here to Stay\\ \Let's Call the Whole Thing Off', and \A Foggy Day In London Town\. weekend day in their vicinity, thus providing the famous three- day weekend. History has scarcely been the beneficiary of the legislation, he said, and the meaning of the Monday holidays has been lost in the Monday exodus. Especially lost in the shuffle of holidays is Was- hington-Lincoln Day in Febru- ary. Honor and tribute due each of these great men has been diminished in the process. Will this law now ever be reversed? It only seems to reinforce the decline in values which we see gradually trying to engulf our country. \The Indians of Our Area\ was the most absorbing topic of the program given by Mrs. 'William Shukis. From a paper researched and written by Netta Hunt Stamp, she recounted the early known history of the Senecas (the Great Hill People) who believed that they originated by breaking out of the earth from a high hill ncar Canandaigua Lake; and the League of the Six Nations, whose territory extended from the Hudson to the Genesee River. Legends say that Hiawatha advised the forming of the League as a method of strength adn solidarity against their enemies. It endured until the Sullivan Raid in 1779. Many fascinating stories of Indian lore were recounted: of betrayal, vengeance and rivalry between the Indian villages, as well as of loyalty to the League as a whole and determination to preserve their way of life. Well-known chieftains who lived in our area were Big Tree, Com planter, his half-brother Handsome Lake, the Peace Prophet, and Little Beard, whose village Beardtown or Genesee Castle was the last fortress to be leveled in the Sullivan Raid. Several Indian burying grounds have been unearthed in the Lima area, where once stood the village Ska- hase-ga-o, meaning It Was Once a Long Creek. Many other small villages were in existence in this area. In the Sullivan Raid forty Indian villages and 160,000 bushels of com as well as vegetables and fruit were destroyed, thus effectively clos- ing the Western Door of the Long House.
