Photo by Jack Haley Chargers \C\ Team The Chargers overcame the cold on Oct. 4 to defeat Wayland 30-0 anti to add yet another shutout to their record. On offense, they tOtal- ed 205 yards wiih 2 touchdowns from Tadd Stacy. Todd Lewis and time they play. Erin Corcoran had the team's ftrst blocked punt of the year. Jamie Miller caught 2 Avon fourth down punts and ran for touchdowns. One was called back because of a penalty. He also tried to score one more touchdown with an interception. He had his sights on the end ZOlle, but forgot to hold onto the ball. Jon Belec and Joe Sacco led the defense with 5 tackles each. Andy Dunham, Trent Kahute and Tadd Stacy had 3 apiece. The majority of the tackles came from the whole defensive team playing together as one. This team rates an A plus in defense. Now let's talk about offense. They seared 30 more points to bring their 5 game total up to 112 points. Joe Sacco started it off with a 52-yard opening day touchdown. Joc·also scored another touchdown, but that one was called back because of a penalty. He led the team with 69 yards. Todd Lewis had another great day. He scored 2 touchdowns right up the middle. One was from 3 yards out and the other from 6 yards out. Todd also scored an extra point with a sweep to the right. Tadd Stacy also scored a touchdown only to be brought back because of penalties. But Tadd bounced back to score 2 points on an extra play run. Kyle Wolcott ran for 2 points on an extra play run with a great second effort by spinning off a would be tackler and then sprinting into the end zone. Mike Parker and Jim Pribanich added some more tough yards to make up the total of 186 offensive yards. Blocking is the key to any offense. This team continues to do it often and they do it well. No matter what happens Monday through Saturday, to this team, Sunday means football! Chargers \B\ Team On Oct. 4, Wayland came to town and met a ftred up Charger squad that would not be denied. The Chargers' Steve Horan lOOk the kickoff and returned it to the Wayland 42 Kyle Wolcott each scored a touchdown and exira point runs. Joe Sacco, Mike Parker, Andy Dunham and Jamie Miller also ran the ball to figure into that total yardage. The offensive line, including the 4 bangers, did another excellent job. They seem to improve with every game. Cougar Football Defensively, what can be said? Another shutout, that's what. That brings the total up to 3 shutouts out of 4 games! This team just seems to seck out that ball carrier like it's second nature. They totaled 34 solo tackles led by Jason Sahrle, Jim Pribanich and Mike Francis. The rest of the tackles were made by so many Chargers it was hard to tell who made the original hit. Most of the time, there were so many black jerseys in a bunch, that it was hm·d to even see the ball carrier. There aren't too many teams (Jut there that can play their starters· and substitutes , _0 equally and still achieve the .success that this team has.' We are half way through the season and this team has 3 shutouts with only 12 points sc<;>red against them. Offensively, they have scored 82 points. Now that's football! The HF-L Chargers C Team was true to form on Oct. 11 with another shutout victory against Avon 30-0. Steve Jacobsmeier and Peter Lang sack Avon's quarterback Eric Smith in yard line. Jamie Butler's 8 yard run was followed by Tony Alai's 8 yard run for a first down on the Wayland 26. Following a 5 yard Charger penalty for illegal procedure, Mike Lewis ran for eight yards, Alai for 3 and Butler for 5, giving the Chargers a ftrst down on the 11 yard line. On the next play, Butler hit tight end, Mike Krenzer for 11 yards and the touchdown. The PAT failed and the Chargers had a 6-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Wayland took over at the 43 yard line, but could only advance the ball 4 yards in four plays and the Chargers took over on downs at the 43. After a 3. yard run by Greg Meisenzahl, Lewis broke through for a 40 yard run and the second Charger TD. The PAT pass to James Martorana was good, giving the Chargers a 14-0 lead. In the second quarter, Dan Clifford took over at quarterback and after running for II yards for a first down at the 12, hit Martonara with a 12 yard pass for the touchdown. Lewis then ran for the PAT giving the Chargers a 22-0 lead, where the half ended. Midway through the third quarter, after a series of injuries to the Wayland players, the game was called, giving the Chargers a 22-0 victory and a 3-0- I record. On Ocl II, the Chargers journeyed to A von to take on the 3-1 Avon Giants. HFL kicked off to start the game and Avon started on their own 27 yard line. On the ftrst play, A von broke over tackle and appeared to be headed for a TD, when the runner was overtaken by Lewis and hauled down on the HFL 9 yard line, first and goal to go. The Chargers defense then stiffened and on fourth and goal for Avon, Lewis intercepted an Avon pass attempt, giving the Chargers the ball on the five yard line. After two running plays, Butler hit Tony Alai for a 14 yard pass and a first down on their own 20 yard line. Following a 6 yard run by Butler, Alai took the hand-off and broke through the Avon line and down the left side. One A von defender had a shot at Alai, but was taken out by a good block by Krenzer, and Alai scampered the rest of the way for a 74 yard TD and 6-0 Charger lead. The PAT was no good. In the second quarter, the Chargers drove to the Avon 19 yard line, but were held on downs. The Giants took over and drove for two first downs to the 39 yard line. On the next play Avon was called for intentional grounding (loss of down) followed by an illegal proc.edure call putting the ball back to the 24 yard line. On the ensuing play, the Avon scat back broke through the right side of the line and appeared to be headed for paydirt, but was brought down from behind by Butler after a 70 yard jaunt, giving the Giants a first and goal on the Chargers 6. The Chargers were up to the challenge and thwarted the A von quest for a score when Lewis intercepted a Giant pass returning it to the II yard line, where the second quarter ran out with the Chargers on top 6-0. In the third quarter, the teams played to a standofr. Two HFL drives were stalled by clipping penalties, and one Avon drive was stopped, when on a fourth down, Avon tried a fake punt, but safety Krenzer broke through to nail the A von runner for a scven yard loss. Starting the fourth quarter with a fourth down and one on the Gian ts 41, Butler ran for 10 yards and a first down on the 31. After an incomplete pass, Butler ran for I and 15, followed by an Alai 2 yard run. On the next. play, Butler on a keeper skipped around left end for 13 yard~ and the TD. The PAT pass to Alai was good giving the Chargers a 14-0 lead. However, the Giants were still very much alive. After returning the Chargers kickoff to the HFL 47, on the second play. from scrimmage, the Avon quarterback hit his wide receiver· for a 47 yard pass and the TO. The PAT pass was good, closing the seore to 14-8. On the next series, the Giants held the Chargers and took over on their own 33 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, the Gianl~ tried a pass, but the Chargers' Alai stepped in front of the intended receiver and gathered in the interception. The Giants rose to the occasion and held the following Charger drive, taking over on their own 40 yard line. With time running out, the Giants ran two plays for 5 yards. Then they attempted a last ditch pass which was good, but the receiver was tackled by Alai and the clock ran out giving the Chargers a hard fought, well deserved 14-8 victory. Chargers \A\ Team The HF-L Chargers \A\ Team remains undefeated. They won the last two games on Oct. 4 and II by reason of forfeits by Wayland and Avon. What can be said about this defense? These kids are so tough in the trenches and when they get psyched up, look out! They add more to the gamr. each their battle with the Avon Braves. Avon prevailed though, 13-0.
