I ROBERTS, Gen. A*t*t P O. . Geu*l Paas'r Ag't, «3 Main St., New York City. . tluffalo, N Y The reported gross earnings of the railroads of the country in the pro- tective-tariff year of -1899 exceeded tho gross earnings of 1 S 95 T the cor responding year of the last free-trade administration, by $238,000,000. It took a tremendous increase in the amount of freight handled and in the number of passengers carried to run receipts up by that amount, and it took an increase in the business of the country almost beyond 'concep tion to make the receipts for freight and passenger service leap so far be- 3*ond what they were in -1895. The Increase in the business of the rail roads is itself a part <4 general pros perity, but it is more than that. It is an indication of increase in other lines of business. Tho increase in freight receipts means that more goods were transported, and that more goods were, bought and sold The freight charges me but a fiac- tional part of tbo goods handled. Therefore the $23S,6oO,OdO increase in railroad gross earnings is but a workmgman's arm crashing a serpent. Its ticket is made up as follows: Mom- ber of Assembly, Benjamin W. Hart- well of Lc Roy, county iudge, Jamejj A. Lc Scur, of Batavia; county clerk, Carlos A. Hull of Batavia; county treasurer, L. F. McLean Of Batavia, superintendent of the poor, G-eorge Taylor, of Corfu. Messrs. Hull and McLean are al ready oh the regular Republican ticket .recently placed in the field and are consequently endorsed. Both men are widely known throughout Genesee county and are popular. A secret session of the part)*-for mers was held at the law office of Lc- Seur & Kent, and it is said that Republicans were present ropresept- ing several towns. It was the unani- •mous sentiment of the meeting that Hull and McLean should be indorsed. Mr. Hartwcll is a prominent Repub lican, formerly Superintendent of the Poor. The nominations will be made legal by petition. James A. Lc Scur, who has started in to knock out the regular party candidates, is a political hustler. nell of the Avon Dispatch Was sued for libel iiccauso ho called a man a ** dead beat, and tho Recorder says if ho is,tho samo rod-headed son-of-a- gun that- borrowed money of thorn _ and forgot to settle he is one,- suro.
