Prom ise. me that you will never again go with the Penitentes—promise me, Maroelena, although 1 may not live to know that you keep your promise.” So Maroelena promised and then brought her guitar and played sweetly to her lover, who watched her with intent gaze, long ing for a new lease of life, that he might call her bis own. Through tbe interference of friends be became an Inmate of tbe government hos pital at the fort and improved so rapidly that be sent for Maroelena tooome to bim and be married by the post chaplain. “No,” sold Marcelona in the proverb of her people; “ that would bo the haysCaolk going after the cow. I marry at home or not Bt ell.” Pretty Marcelona controlled herself as best she could and in a moment of lonoU- ness consented to attend a ball with a fo^ mer lover, Sonor Fillpe, who bad sworn to blraeelf that she should never marry an other man. But of this the New Mexican girl was quite unconscious. She arrayed herself for the ball In an elaborate dano- )f gay strii solored bei . down the breadths, feet were Incased In soft kid moccasins, for this was an occasion when she wore her tribal dress, and she carried tbe casta nets bequeathed to her by her Spanish mother. So accoutered she accompanied Senor Fillpe. That night Maroelena was, as usual, the belle of the ball. It was not at all- sur prising that she should accept the homage stvjwered upon her, but her heart was not In it, and at midnight she stepped to tbe open door of the dancing hall, and looked far over the shining plain, and thought of her lover lying in the ward of the hos pital, perhaps dying under that same glori ous moonlight. Blanca, her friend, had taken the last dance for her, and she step ped out to breathe the welcome tonlo of the night air. Some one was singing “ El Borraobito,” giving the refrain in English, badly bro- ‘And a passion for a woman caneod it all.” The Borraohlto—“the man who is a lit tle druDk”—waB tbe cavalier Fillpe who had brought Maroelena to the ball, and who was now ready to take her home, swung to tho same saddle, a nlode of con veyance not only proper, but popular among the Pueblna He bad lighted her cigarette and was looking into her eyes with that dashing, daring audacity which was her meed of homage. She curled her red Ups Just a little at his too ardent gaze, but be was aooustomed to that—only there was that in bis mind tonight of which she knew nothing. The rest of the company were out watching tbe pair on the fieet M exican “ Someday,” says one of the rejected, •‘he will run away with herl” “That fiery Filipe—no. She is too tame. He knows she will marry the Yankee schoolmaster—poor little one.” The flash of sliver on the glrl’e dress dazzled their eyes in tbe moonlight. She wore enough silver ctoases and strands of beads to buy a dozen pardons. Her handsome arms clasped tbecaValier Filipe, but not too olosely, she was in a hurry to get home to pray for her “Jamez.” They dashed Into the moonlight and across the plnza, through tbe plain be yond, over fields of oactue, startling tho Jack rabbits and the piping quail, and away Uke tho wind, but in an opposite di rection to the home of Marcelona At first tho girl did not notice it, but FUipe, flushed and fearless, called out; “To Acoma, gazelle, to the country of Filipe, and you will never see your puny American again!” There was a wild cry of despair, as the girl tried to throw herself from the flying horse, but could not free herself for a mo- ) passionate grasp c “ Kill away, my pretty angel d’amor, but you shall be my wife first.” On and on, with the speed of tho wind, went the fleet horse, and they were near ing the little cemetery In the valley when Marcelena’s arm relaxed, and her head drooped on the shoulder of Filipe. He be lieved she had fainted and attempted to change his position when, like a flash of lightning, the steel polnard in his belt cleft the air and descended—not in his treaoherons heart, but In the soft breast of the beautiful and desperate Marcelena. At that moment a company of United States soldiers came pouring out of an ambulance which was slowly passing on its way to Fort Bowie. They captured the cavalier Fillpe and look th e ap p a r e n tly lifeless g ir l to th e hos pital, a temporary building then In use. M a rcelena w as n o t dead, not even fatal ly wounded.
