TtEI VBT.J.UAN r-LIXON CONGKESSMAN The republicans of the 22d congro.«.«- ional district, cotnpri.sing the counties of Saratog.a, Fulton, Hunilton and St. Law rence, have split oni the- choice o f tnemner of congress. The district convention first met at Sacandaga P.irb, where 130 dead lock ballots were taken between Septem ber 14 and 20. October 2, the conyenljon reassembled at Saratoga Springs, where the deadlock was continued until mid night, last Friday night. During this pro tracted contest l,i;i5 ballots were taken. St. Lawrence cast 15 vote.s for Gen. N. M. Cuni.s, Saratoga gave yotes for Gen. W. B. French, and Fulton and Ham ilton tl vote.s for Jupge A. D. L. Baker. Two years ago a much less prolonged ileadlork was broken l>.v a solemn prom ise from Gen. Curtis that he would not be a candidate for re-election. The south ern counties of the district charged Gen. Curtis with h a ! faith, denounced his grecil ami utterly refused to support him. T'lie delegates ca't 15 votes for other St. Lawrence county republicans on several oecasi 'us, but the delegatus from St. Lawrence refu.sed to consider any other name than that of Curtis. Finally the southern delegates resolved to vote for no St. Lawrence county man. Heated w .rds passed ■ between the opposing forces, which included prominent, repub licans from each county. A f t e r m idn igh t la s t F r id a y nig h t St Lawrence delegate.s withdrew from the convention, although the motion to adjourn was lost. Thereupon, Fulton, Himilton and Saratoga, nominated Gi n. W. B. French for congre.Js, but too late for tiling the nomination with the seere- r-.ry of state, althougli a special engine and uie.sseuger stood ready for the ruii to Albany. Monday, Gen. F'reuch tit dined 'he n.iinination and Fulton coun y pre- si-nteil Lucius N. Littauer, a wealthy gluv.* manufaclurer, as an independent I’l-puhlictn candid’,fe. P ’titions favor ing t.im were .signori iiy 1,.’>00 republicai s fr >in Fu ton county, .aCil from Saratoga co-.uit' and UOO from St. Lawn-nce eoun- ty, and Wedi.tsday afternoon these peti tio n s were filed at .\loanv. One o f the most remarkable features of the pre-eut political camp.iign is the evi dent alliance between the reputdican party and tl’e secret A. P. A. It is stated that 110 members of the recent republican state convention at Saratoga were also A. P. A. members, and that it was the op position of these members tl'.at prevented Boss Platt from nominating ex-Mayor Aldridge of Rochester for lieub-nant gov ernor. The same secret force is al.so .said to have prevented the republican conven tion from adopting a resolution denounc ing religous proscription, as the commit tee on platform were urged to do by lion. Patrick Egan,, republican minister to Chili under Vresident Harri'on. “ D row n ing m e n grasp a t stra w s .\ the presidential election of 1!S',I2 the re publican p a r ty lo s t six or e ig h t young western states, formerlv counted as sure ly republican. United States senators from those states are now mo.sfy demo crats or populists. Senator Stewart and Jones of Nevada, elected as lepublicans, have boldly deserted their parly and gone over to the populists. In the coming fall elections several more repnblii’an sena'- ors will undoubtedly be lost in the we.st. There is u'lt the ghost of a ehanoe for the republican party to regain con’rol o f tin United State.s senate during the present century. This is certain, no matter what temp.oi.ary succes.ses m:iy be acliieved. '’arill' reform has come to stay, but iln' plutocrats are still desperate. An alii ance with the A. P. A. is therefojo quite natural. 'What is the A. P. A ? A secret nll'ance designed to prevent Roman Cathohe- from bolding office, and therefore deny ing them any voice in legislation. This means taxation without ri pre.sentati.in, principle against which our forefathi rs of the revolution successfully rebelled. The A, P. A. will nOt succeed. No secret society ever succeeded in An'crlean poli- 'ics. An A. P.
