ly on r fry m ike WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29,1995 SPORTS Sportsman racing out at Charlotte ByJOEMACENKA AP Sports Writer CONCORD, N.C. - Charlotte Motor Speedway moved Tuesday to distance itself from Sportsman racing, which has produced three driver fatalities at the track • in six years. \ But the series continued to get support from NASCAR. \There comes a time and a P0int where you just have to rrfove on,\ said H.A. \Humpy\ Wheeler, president and general manager of the Charlotte track. ; Wheeler initiated the series as a way for drivers from small dirt arid paved tracks, stock car rac- ing's so-called bull rings,' to gain experience in superspeedway driving. But the division never gained widespread popularity and was hounded by claims that the cars \#ren't safe enough and many drivers weren't qualified to make the step up to Charlotte's 1.5- raile, high-banked trioval. \The death of Russell Phillips in an Oct. 6 race at Charlotte, where the roof of the 26-year-old driver's car was sheared off, prompted Wheeler and NASCAR officials to reevaluate the divi- sion. As a result, Wheeler said Tuesday he had decided to replace the Sportsman races on his 1996 schedule with two events for ARCA cars, which more closely resemble Winston Cup cars. '; \We think ARCA is really evolving into a major player on the United States racing scene,\ Wheeler said. |\ NASCAR, however, said it was not ready to abandon the Sport- sman cars, which have less hprsepower and fewer safety features than Winston Cup, Grand National or ARCA cars and are designed to be more af- f6rdable. \We haven't made a decision, either for '96 or beyond regarding the Sportsman division. We're looking at a lot of options,\ NASCAR spokesman Kevin Triplett said. \What's been decided is solely a track decision bjy Charlotte.\ ' Charlotte was one of just two tracks holding Sportsman races. The other is Pocono International Raceway, a 2.5-mile, low-banked tr v ack where the cars have com- pjted for several years without any major problems. \'Calls Tuesday to Pocono about {he track's future with Sport- sman cars were referred to (Joseph Mattioli, the chairman of Che facility in Long Pond, Pa. A frack spokeswoman said Mattioli f/as traveling and could not be reached. n KRAVITZ ¥ Continued from Page 12 tiniforms. ; • I say we put Elmore Spencer and, um, well, there isn't space to put anybody else in the room, is there? ( . You watch this guy run at practice, you're afraid if his thighs rub together any more, he's going to start a grease fire. Ah, but it's nice to read that the most important thing for Spencer is getting in his daily workouts. Forget getting in NBA shape or actually contributing something for his million-plus dollars. Is this guy the sloppy reincar- nation of Jerome Lane, or what? The guy could take some cues from Bryant Stith, whose grit and determination might be the best thing about these Nuggets. • If you saw the Cowboys trash the Raiders in Oakland v ahd the 49ers rip the Dolphins in Miami, you know the AFC has zero chance — again — of com- peting in this year's Super Bowl. ;. And that includes the paper\ t^ger Kansas City Chiefs, who at least put up a fight before suc- cumbing to Dallas on Turkey Day. ; • Sorry, but the Dolphins look like a team that's flat mailed it in on Don Shula. Somebody call the Coast Guard and tell Jimmy Johnson hjs ship has come in. • If Antonio McDyess ever learns a low-post move other \than two dribbles to his left and jump over the opponent for a 10- footer, he will be unstoppable. - Come to think of it, he's gener- ally unstoppable with that single (nove. • • Note to Dikembe: We like the goggles look. And don't Worry: Nobody will confuse you |with Kareem. ; • You didn't have to be a fig- ure-skating maven to appreciate 'the athleticism and beauty of Grinkov and Gordeeva, who redefined their sport.
