•%•». s PAGE 20 PRESS-REPUBLICAN LOCAL MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13,1995 NEWSMAKERS Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Ogdensburg has awarded its prestigious \Caritas Award\ to Pamela J. Wilson of Plattsburgh. The Board of Trust- ees of Catholic Charities selected Wilson, associate director of Catholic Charities, because of her dedication to Catholic Chari- ties as interim director, and her compassionate leadership and commitment to the mission of Catholic Charities during the past 10 years. The Caritas Award is the highest award given by the Catholic Diocese in the area of human service. Wilson holds a master of science degree in counseling from SUNY Plattsburgh. She is the daughter of Tom and Dody Wilson of Malone. Dr. Vinay Likhite was presented the McPherson College Citation of Merit in recognition of his pas- sion during more than four de- cades of serious scholarship, in appreciation of his participation in the communities in which he has lived and in gratitude for his dedication to the service of hu- manity. His passion for pursuing educational and scientific \ex- cellence, his regard for humanity and his obsession to find a solu- tion for the treatment of cancer, a disease which claimed the life of his mother, inspired and com- pelled Dr. Likhite to establish the Champlain Valley Im- munology Foundation in 1982, in Plattsburgh. It sponsors the in- dependent non-profit Cancer Research Center which is dedicated to pursuing the prevention and eradication of cancer. Dr. Likhite is married to Dr. Fern Likhite, a family physician in Plattsburgh. They have four children, a daughter Jean, and three sons, Keith, Tony and Alec. Robert M. Gorrow '52, chairper- son of the SUNY Plattsburgh College Council, has been ap- pointed by SUNY Chancellor Thomas Bsrtlett to serve on the University-Wide Task Force on Campus Safety. Bartlett appointed the task force to study the safety issue in the wake of several disturbing incidents that occurred on SUNY campuses during the past year, including the hostage situation at SUNY Albany last spring. The SUNY Plattsburgh Alum- ni Association honored two indi- viduals — one an alumnae and the other, a college administrator — at the Homecoming '95. Colleen Pope, manager of the communications department at the International Paper (I.P.) Mill in Ticonderoga, was presen- ted with the Off To A Good Start Award, while William D. Laundry, director of campus life, was given the Faculty/Staff Impact Award. The Off to a Good Start Award is given to the alumna/us who has graduated within the last five years, who has gotten \off to a good start\ in a career, who is demonstrating a sense of respon- sibilities within his/her com- munity and who has continued a relation with SUNY Plattsburgh in some manner. The Faculty/ Staff Impact Award is presented to a faculty or staff member, cur- rent or retired, who has had a major and lasting positive impact on the life of alumni. Pope, a 1990 graduate of SU- NY Plattsburgh, is responsible for all internal communications, employee relations, community, and public relations at the I.P. Mill. When Laundry began working at SUNY Plattsburgh in 1969 as director of housing, he embarked on a career where he interacted with many students who are now alumni of the College. Dr. Lynne Soine, associate pro- fessor of human resources at SUNY Plattsburgh, recently had a paper entitled Combining Class Action Litigation and Social Science Research: A Case Study in Helping Homeless Women with Children, published in the spring 1995 issue of \The Ameri- can University Journal of Gender .& the Law.\ Dr. Robert P. Graham co-authored the book with three other individuals — two from Japan and a professor from SUNY Albany. Chairman of the physics department since 1993, Dr. Graham has authored several ar- ticles in the area of upper at- mospheric physics. He has con- ducted several research projects, most recently one involving measurements of atmospheric airglow at Plattsburgh and on King George Island in the Ant- arctic, which required two trips to the southernmost continent of the world. The newly renovated cardiac catheterization lab at Park Ridge Hospital in Rochester wilt be named Gerald Francis Ryan, M.D. Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in recognition of the cardiologist who launched the program in 1975. Dr. Gerald Ryan opened the Cardiology Depart- ment and served as its chairman for 18 years. Dr. Ryan is a resident of Greece, N.Y. He attended St. John's Academy in Plattsburgh and St. Michael's College in Vermont. Nancy Stanco is one of seven local students — and the only one in Essex County — to be chosen as a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. The Ticonderoga High School senior won't know until February whether she gets a scholarship. Stanco, 17, came to Ticonderoga from Brooklyn and is living with Harold and Angela Sammis. She plans to major in economics and finance at Vassar, Cornell or University of Massachusetts. She's one of only 15,000 students to get to the National Merit Award semifinals, but there are only 6,900 scholarships to hand out in February 1996.
