She re- mained there until Dec. 9, when she returned to New Jersey for the holidays. She also stayed with them for two days around Jan. 9, when she returned to the area. Zy said in November, she heard Jones discussing with Koufomichalis renting a home- entertainment center and then selling it to cover Jones's bad checks. In the time she stayed at the apartment on Macomb Street, \he got along with Vanessa fine.\ In January,,^ there were two dogs at the, apartment, including Stoner, the dog Koufomichalis is' accused of abusing. Under questioning by Clute, Zelinsky talked about her past criminal record. \I admit I got caught stealing. I admit I got caught driving without a license,\ Zelinsky said. However, she denied being convicted of disorderly conduct. \I've never been in a fight. Never.\ Clute said Zelinsky's police re- cord, which was in front of her, did have a conviction for disorderly conduct. She also ad- mitted being convicted of signing a false statement. Penny Gregory of Keeseville, who was a friend of Koufomichalis and Jones, said they spent Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve 1994 at her home. Koufomichalis was a frequent visitor and Jones an occasional one. She said she never saw bruises on Jones nor had Jones com- plained about abuse. < Joseph Serge, manager of Rent - A -Center, said Koufomichalis rented an enter- tainment center Dec. 2, 1994, and stopped making payments Dec. 17. Write-in candidates Although there is no official list of write-ins, there appears to be write-in campaigns in various towns and villages throughout the county. In most cases, lifting the write-in slide in the voting booth locks out all other canidates for that office. However, if for example the write-in is among several running for two or more seats, lifting the slide will still allow you to vote for the re- maining seats. Voting for a write-in is a matter of sim- ply writing the candiate's name on the slip of paper revealed after raising the metal slide at the top of the voting booth. Miller Street project done for the season By JOE LoTEMPLIO Staff Writer PLATTSBURGH - Naviga- tion for Miller Street motorists and Post Office visitors will soon improve as major street renova- tions are winding down. For about two months, Miller Street, in front of the U.S. Post Office and the rear of the Press- Republican building, has been torn_up as jirews worked on widening theToad andimproving\ sewers. * For years, that portion of Miller Street was one of the most congested in the city as motorists and pedestrians fought their way to the Post Office. The $237,000 renovation pro- ject was designed to widen the road and allow a parking lane 6n the Press-Republican side of the street. Work on the sejwer system near Lorraine Street was done, and new sidewalks were install- ed. \This should improve the traf- fic flow and make it somewhat safer,\ City Engineer George Miller said. \It should be much better, but it is still a very con- gested area.\ „• Work crews put down a base of tarmac last week as the project wdund^do.wn r butMiller said the final topping will not be put down until next spring. He said the city and the con- tractor thought it would be best to wait until spring for the final coat, of blacktop because they were worried- about a filled-in trench settling over the winter. The trench was dug for the sewer work, and Miller said it was close to about 15 feet deep. A Photo £ditbf/DaVe Paeiak Work on Miller Street in Plattsburgh is expected to con- tinue through this week and be finished next year. trench that deep takes a while to settle, he said, so there was no point in putting on the final top- ping until workers know what the situation will be after it set- tles. Miller said the decision to wait until spring for the final topping will have no bearing on the cost of the project. Crews should be finished with work for the winter in about a week or so, Miller said, and traf- fic can return to normal.
