MacDougal's hat trick gave her eight goals in the playoffs. Chazy gives Tregan a section title for the road ByJOHNCORYER Staff Writer PLATTSBURGH - Chris Demers and the Chazy Eagles wanted to make Saturday a special night for not only themselves, but also their coach. The Eagles were told earlier in the week that Tom Tregan, who has coached the varsity soccer program the past seven years, is leaving to take a teaching posi- tion in the Plattsburgh City School District on December 1. Tregan has guided his Chazy teams to six-Mountain^ &- Valley- Athletic Conference champions and five sectional crowns. \We wanted to give coach another banner,\ Demers said. \We were psyched for the game, and had intensity at the beginn- ing. We were able to stay up the whole game.\ The Eagles delivered. Demers scored four goals and assisted on another as Chazy won the Sec- tion VII Class D boys soccer title with a 6-0 win over Bolton at Seton Catholic Field. The opening 13 minutes of the game were a nightmare for Bolton. Demers pounced on a rebound and scored at 4 minutes, 43 sec- onds of the first half when Bolton netminder Jesse Foy was unable to control a Chazy shot. Then at 7:34, Demers ran onto a pass from Darrell Lamb and scored from straight on to make it 2-0. It only grew worse for Bolton when leading scorer Ruben Caldwell was issued his second yellow card and ejected from the gameat the 12-minute mark. Caldwell was hit with a soft red card which meant Bolton did not have to play a man down. Casey O'Connor gave Chazy a 3-0 advantage at 12:54 with an indirect kick. \We didn't use both sides of the field enough in the first half, but that was the only thing we didn't-do right tonight,\ Tregan said. \The kids were ready to play — and played extremely well.\ Chazy put the contest out of reach in the first 12 minutes of the second half. James Moser turned and fired a low shot into the net at 8:23, and Demers rocketed a shot into the corner at 11:53. Demers end- ed the scoring at 12:20 with another shot into the corner. \The most goals I had ever scored in a game before this was two,\ Demers said. \My third and fourth goals were probably the best of the four tonight. We were able to get on top early and I thought our defense played a strong game as well.\ Chazy, while improving to 15-5 overall, outscored three playoff opponents 14-0. Red Dragons' defense ends PSUC men's soccer season CORTLAND - Playing well is one thing, winning is another. The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team outgunned host Cor- tland, 16-7, in shots Saturday but still dropped a 1-0 decision in the semifinals of the ECAC Tournament. \We had so many chances to score,\ Plattsburgh State coach Chris Waterbury said. \We car- ried the play right from the beginning. \I felt we were clearly the bet- ter team, but playing good soccer Saturday didn't get us a win. The fact is we played well enough to win, but we didn't get the job done. We underachieved as far as I'm concerned.\ The lone goal of the game was scored at 31 minutes, 51 seconds by Brian Vamosy. \A\ cross came into our area, and we cleared it out,\ Water- bury said. \But the clear went off the chest of one of their players and into the 18 to Vamosy, who scored from about 10 yards out. It was kind of a fluke goal.\ File Photo Chris Waterbury The Cardinals had numerous opportunities to get even, but Terry Moss recorded seven saves in net for the Red Dragons. A senior, Tabetha Knott knows about them all too well. Saturday afternoon, the duo combined to give Moriah its big- gest girls sports accomplishment in the 1990s: a 3-0 victory over Westport for the Section VII Class D girls soccer title. The section title is Moriah's first in girls soccer. \This feels great; maybe we'll get some respect around school now,\ said MacDougal, who scored all of Moriah's goals. \Now we want to go further:\ The Vikings get their chance to go further on Tuesday when the play Section X champion Ed- wards-Knox in a 1 p.m. game at Harrisville. \This is the best feeling: when you put your hard work into |;V something and come out with a championship,\ Knott said. Knott knows. Moriah (8-8-3) is i \7-1-1 in its last nine games and I :is at .500 after October 1 for the [f; first time in her four-year varsity ; career. Prior to this week, Knott • had never played in a section semifinal. \I wouldn't trade this for any- thing in the world,\ Knott said. \This team has worked hard, stuck together, kept a great at- titude. We believed we could be champions. I knew if we played like we have the seven previous games, that we would get the job done.\ Knott recorded five saves but all were on strong high shots headed for. the sides of the net \'--^-jftj which qutshp^t the i. t also fired several times . \I felt our defense — Corey Pombrio, Matt Devins and Eric Munson — played very well,\ Tregan said. \And you can put halfback Tim Mulligan in there. \We weren't able to win the sectionals last year, and we lost some good players off that team. The kids on this yearns team worked hard during both the winter and summer. \They didn't win the MVAC ti- tle, but got what they deserved tonight. We have five seniors on the team, and they did a great job on and off the field dealing with, the younger playersjni the team.\ Terry Lapier and Eric Bowman, who played the final 13:42, combined for the shutout in net for Chazy with six saves. The loss stopped a strong post-season run by Bolton, coached by Tom Muscatello. Bolton had recorded a 1-0 win over Lake Placid and a 2-1 victo- ry over MVAC champion Willsboro to advance to the finals. Foy, B, 12. \Richie King had one shot from point-blank range that their goaltender made a remarkable save on,\ Waterbury said. \Tom Bedinotti and Chris Gondek also had some clear op- portunities but were unable to score. It was frustrating.\ Andy Cumbo made six stops in the Cardinals' nets. It was Pittsburgh's second loss to Cortland this season and ended the Cardinals' season at 14-4-1. The Red Dragons will play in today's title game. \Expectations were not as great this season because we had such a young team,\ Waterbury said. \But I still felt this team got cheated. \Playing well just doesn't cut it if you .don't win: You can search for positives in a loss, but that's the easy way out. I've got to sit down with each returning player next year and address some things. We need to do a better job next year.\ The Cardinals ended the season by losing two of their last three games — 3-1 to St. Lawrence and the 1-0 setback to Cortland. \It wasn't like that we didn't play well — because we did,\ Waterbury said. \We had more of a slump in the middle of the season.\ \I*m so happy for Tabetha,\ Moriah coach Jim Wade said. \Shete gotten banged up in her seasons with us. She hasn't got- ten ihe recognition she deserves, but she's kept this team; .com- petitive in every game this year and in games throughout her ca- reer.\ With Knott en route to her sixth shutout overall and third in four postseason games, Moriah needed only to solve Westport's defense. MacDougal's first goal came 9 minutes, 27 seconds into the game when she and a team- mate were left alone at the top of the penalty area directly in front. Westport keeper Wendy Tromblee leaped at the soft chip but couldn't bat it away. , \Now that we have four peo- ple on the front line, it's easier for me and our other forwards to put more pressure on,\ Mac- Dougal said. Twelve minutes later, Westport's hopes effectively end- ed when senior Nanette Sherman was carried from the field and taken directly to the hospital for x-rays after turning an ankle. \She has anchored us in the middle all season,\ Westport coach Brad Rascoe said. \We moved Sondra Quaglietta from a wing fullback to stopper to con- tain (the Vikings') Maria Slattery and moved Sherman to halfback. But, we didn't plan io play without Sherman.\ Though down, the Eagles stayed within one until the final two minutes of the half. The Vikings broke in 4-o»r3 and then 2-0. Tromblee made a great save on the first .shot, charging from the net and ^sliding into the at- tacker, but MacDougal .potmced on the loose ball and fired. \It was their aggressiveness that caused us problems,\ Rascoe said. \They went to,the ball hard. We have nothing to be ashamed of, We had a fine season, brought home one championship and lost to a very good team. Moriah moved the ball well and hit their support.\ MacDougal's third goal — a cross-goal rocket into the high corner — came midway through the second half. • \Our lack of scoring was a pro- blem the first half of the season, but we've worked on it,\ Wade said. It was a lack of ag- gressiveness, but the last few weeks the girls have realized we have to go hard to the ball to set up scoring opportunities.\ Moriah 3, Wwtpott 0 Moriah 2 1-3 Wsstpert 0 0-0 First halt- 1, M, H.
