SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5,1995 RABIN ASSASSINATION SPECIAL REPORT '•H-. Leaders condemn Rabin Shooting By CINDY ROBERTS Associated Press Writer The assassination of Yitzhak Rabin brought cries of condem- nation from around the world and, among his enemies, bitter words of approval. PLO chief Yasser Arafat ex- pressed shock and sadness at the Saturday attack and said Rabin was a \great leader of peace.\ Jordan, which signed a peace treaty with Israel just a year ago, said the peace effort must con- tinue. \There is only one way to counter extremism on both sides and that is to press ahead with the peace process,\ a government spokesman said. In Washington, President Clinton said \the world has lost one of its greatest men, a warrior for his nation's freedom and now a matyr for his nation's peace.\ The statement was released before the announcement of Rabin's death. Rabin was shot as he left a pro-peace rally in Tel Aviv. A Jewish extremist group has claimed responsibility and an Israeli man is in custody. It is the blessing of the blood of the leader Dr. Fathi Shakaki.\ In Lebanon, Palestinians in a refugee camp in the southern port city of Sidon danced in the streets and fired grenades in the air. The camp houses several fac- tions vehemently opposed to the Arab-Israeli peace process. WASHINGTON CAP)..- Visibly shaken and on the verge of tears, President Clinton •napurned the death of Yitzhak Rabin on Saturday, saying the Israeli prime minister gave his life trying, to bring Israel a .lasting peace. \Goodbye friend,\ said Clinton. In words directed to the state of Israel, Clinton said, \Just as America has stood by you, we all stand by.you in this moment of grieving and loss.\ White House press secretary Mike McCurry said Clinton would depart Sunday afternoon for Israel to attend the funeral, and had spoken to House Speaker Newt Gingrich about gathering a bipartisan congres- sional delegation to accompany the president. The president also was calling former presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George Bush and Ronald Reagan to to invite them to accompany him to Israel, Mc- Curry's office said. Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole of Kansas called Rabin \a hero in a land of heroes.\ Demo- cratic Sen. Paul Simon of Illinois cajlefl Rabin's death \& tyagip lpss for Iiirael and the wot-ld.\ The House International Rela- tions Committee chairman, Rep. Benjamin A. In a statement issued at the State Department, Christopher called Rabin one of the \towering figures of this century. He dedicated his life to Israel... and the cause of peace.\ A statement from Vice Presi- dent Al Gore called Rabin \a statesman of global and historic statue\ and a \martyr in the cause of peace.\ Clinton said that \now it falls to us, all those in Israel, throughout the Middle East who yearn for and love peace, to make sure\ violence never returns to the region. \Peace must be and peace will be Prime Minister Rabin's lasting legacy,\ the president said. \The world has lost one of its greatest men — a warrior for his nation's freedom and now a mar- tyr for his nation's peace,\ Clin- ton said. \To Leah Rabin and her children, Hillary and I send our love and our prayers.\ Clinton was in the White AP Photo President Clinton makes a statement mourning the death of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin yesterday in the White House Rose Garden. Within the hour, the president telephoned Mrs. Rabin and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. \The president was struck by the fact that Mrs. Rabin and Peres told him they'd never seen the prime minister happier,\ McCurry, the spokesman, said. \He was very satisfied with where the peace process was and very pleased personally with the way things were going.\ j I •ft TEL AVIV Continued from Page A-l \A small group, like the one this man is from, thinks more of a piece of land than they do of human life. This is not what I, myself, and much of Israel thinks. First, we want peace, then we can decide what to do,\ Davidovich said. Confidence in the leadership of Foreign Minister/Acting Prime Minister Shimon Peres is high, according to Davidovich. \He was the one who was with Prime Minister Rabin during the entire peace process,\ he said. \I want to- believe,iJaai_it_will go on — the peace process. It will be tough for one month or two, but then it will start new.\ Gary Duesberg has been in Israel a week touring villages, meeting community leaders and sharing in the excitement build- ing over Rabin's peace rally in Tel Aviv, a city that is considered a model of cooperation and rela- tions between Arab-Israelis and Jewish-Israelis. \When it happended, everyone was saying 'is it an Arab?' Perhaps it will add an element of sanity to the discussion,\ Freed- man said. \There has to be some- thing meaningful to come out of this tragedy.\ Until the election is resolved a lot will be up in the air such as dealings with Syria and what to do with the Golan Heights. \We won't know who's speak- ing for Israel,\ Freedman said. \(Foreign Minister Shimon) Peres will probably continue as acting prime minister through the election, but (the assassina- tion) will make the election more deeply fought.\ Dr. Adnan Abughazaleh, pro- fessor of history at SUNY Platt- sburgh, said he felt the assassination may act as a catalyst for peace. What may help the cause is that the suspected gunman*is Jewish. \Rabin was not univer- sally loved in Israel. But he was a widely respected man. As a military leader, he was a spokesman for peace. That put a great deal of strength behind his position. Rabbi Carla Freedman Temple Beth Israel \If the suspect was an Arab, you can bet the peace process would be thrown off the track. Because the suspect is a Jew, it might even give momentum to those advocates for peace in the Israeli government,\ Abughazaleh said. What Freedman said it shows is a growing outspoken anti- peace community in Israel. . \Rabin was not universally loved in Israel,\ said Freedman. \But he was a widely respected PRESENT THIS COUPON TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER O e° C/3 m X Wednesday thru Sunday Daily 10:00AM-7:00PM (closed 2:00-3:00 for lunch) Sunday: 12:00 noon-5:30PM 407 hi 3 Consumer Square, Plattsburgh, HY WAL-MART LLJ % 08 Q. _ l O PORTRAIT STUDIOS Coupon expires Friday Novembor 24 1995 Silling lee ol $4 95 pe' person payable lo Ihe photographer not included in advertised oiler Poses lot advertised portraits our selection You' favorite props wejeome Limit one special package per subject Up lo five additional poses taken tor optional por- trait collection with no obligation to putchase All ages welcome minors under age 18 must be accompanied by a parenti Groups limited to six or less Sorry no pets Portrait sizes approximate the Kennedy assassination,\ he said. \It is 1:30 a.m. Sunday here (7:3Qp.m. Saturday), and our bus driver came out into the street in his under shorts a few minutes ago crying, 'he's dead, he's dead.' It is just devastating for those who want peace. \There is such a contrast from when we came here. There is such a fervor and tremendous di- alogue on what will happen to the Jewish community between those who believe the land is sacred and those who don't.\ \I think it will take a few weeks for this to shake out,\ said man. As a military leader, he was a spokesman for peace. That put a great deal of strength behind his position.\ It may have also led to his death. In recent weeks, Rabin had repeatedly voiced concern about growing political violence in Israel and accused the right- wing opposition of inciting against him. \For 27 years I was a military man. I fought all the time. There was no chance for peace. I believe that now there is a chance for peace and we must take advan- tage of it,\ Rabin said at the peace rally just before being gunned down. \Israeli security services are probably the best in the world,\ Freedman said. \Clearly they didn't think they had to protect their leadership from their own people. What this is saying is D • Duesberg, who intends to remain in Israel until Nov. 12. He has spoken with a variety of Israelis since the assassination and said there are a few who do not agree with the pace of change in their country. \Some have been living with the Jews since 1948 and feel democracy is what the Middle East is going for, Arab and Jew- ish children together,\ he said, \but there are others who feel the government is going too fast from the Jewish perspective. \There are some who thought that Rabin and Peres were going '. too fast.\ ••', ',>» there is a community in Israel that is not only against the peace process but that is actually will- ing to fight against it. It puts the whole process into a different context. That's damaging.\ Freedman said a local memo- rial servite will be held for Rabin, the details of which were being worked out Saturday night.
