PAGE 20 PRESSREPUBLICAN SPORTS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1995 SATURDAY^ By TIM REYNOLDS Staff Writer ELIZABETHTOWN - There's more to winning cross-country meets than crossing the line first. Peru's Johanna Evans won in- dividual honors in Friday's Class B portion of the Section VII Cross-Country Championships, held at Cobble Hill Golf Course in Elizabethtown, and the In- dians' top five runners finished the 3.05-mile race faster than any other team. But Peru's eight-year stran- glehold on the Class B crown ended, as Seton Catholic utilized the benefits of pack running en route to a 34-35 victory over the Indians, advancing the Knights to next Saturday's state meet in Corning. Saranac Lake also advanced to the state meet, winning the girls' Class C championship by 20 points over runner-up Saranac. \Seton ran a great team race,\ Peru coach Scott Woodward said. \They beat us and that's sports.\ Evans' time was 18:44, 15 sec- onds faster than Plattsburgh's Amy Tolosky. Seton's Edann Brady was third, and Jen Hastings was fourth for Peru. Seton runners Anne Larkin, Trish Leary and Katie VanAr- man finished 5-6-7 and, although Peru's pack of Meghan Miller, Beth Fezette, Autumn Swarts and Brooke Facteau actually beat Seton's Jeannette Waldron to the line, the pack finish was enough. \Our girls have a lot of depth,\ Seton coach Gayle Wilson said. \If somebody was going to have a bad race, it would have been OK. But they all ran well (and) I'm so proud of them.\ One of Seton's biggests asset Friday wasn't even one of its runners -r it was Plattsburgh's Heather Spellman's eighth-place finish. Had Spellman finished 11 seconds later, the championship Photo Editor/Dave Paczak AuSable Valley's Heather Freeborn, right, and Saranac's Kelly Duffy match strides in Girls' Class C race. Freeborn went on to 5-second victory over Duffy. would have been Peru's. Besides Seton's team, Evans, Tolosky, Hastings, Spellman and Miller will compete at states as individuals. - \Things don't always go perfectly,\ Woodward said. \In a way, it reminds me what's great about sports.\ ' Saranac Lake completed its improbable climb to a Section VII championship Friday, in only their first-ever season of com- petition with a full team. \I had no idea this would turn into this,\ coach Tom Kilroy said. \I would have been happy just to have formed a team.\ Like Seton, Saranac Lake's tight pack was the difference. Katie Demong was fourth, while Kristen Stemp, Jen Dougherty and Ashley Marshall werj? t 7*8-9 for the Redskins. Catherine Sieissner clinched the champion- ship with her 14th-place show- ing. \We weren't positive of this,\ Marshall said. \We wanted it and we worked hard for it. It's a sense of accomplishment.\ Individually, AuSable Valley's Heather Freeborn added a Class C crown to go with her CVAC championship, as she beat Saranac's Kelly Duffy (who quali- fied for a fifth state meet) by five seconds. \I hope we're over the hump,\ AuSable coach Rod Driscoll said. \She went out fast again and ran with whoever was there. She's making better use of the physical gifts she has.\ Freeborn, Duffy, Saranac's Felicia Williams (third place), Lake Placid's Arien Baker (fifth) and AuSable Valley's Hillary Davis (sixth) are state-bound, in addition to Saranac Lake's top seven runners. X' designates qualification vja team championship y- desginates qualification via individual finish By TIM REYNOLDS Staff Writer ELIZABETHTOWN - Saranac Lake's boys cross-coun- try team has proved its ability all season long. On Friday, so did Ticonderoga's Jay Wells. Wells started strong and finished even stronger, and the. Ticojidexoga sorjho_mgre_was • hardly contested as he won Section VII Class C individual championship at Cobble Hill Golf Course, crossing the line in 15:39 — some 26 seconds faster than Saranac Lake's five-strong pack. With his win, Wells qualified for the New York State cross- country championship meet for the thir.d straight year. \He was ready,\ Ticonderoga coach Brian Kiely said. \It's not surprising that he won — but his time was a little surprising.\ \It was a fun race. I felt good and strong,\ Wells said. \I love this course.\ So did Seton Catholic's Jeremy Stone. Stone established a course re- cord with his winning time of 15:11 in the boys Class B race, which led Seton to its fourth con- secutive Class B team champion- ship. \He should have a good state meet,\ Seton coach Gayle Wilson Photo Editor/Dave Paczak Ticonderoga's Jay Wells, races to victory in Class C race. said. Saranac Lake's boys defended the Class C crown and showed they are ready for next Satur- day's state meet, as only Wells prevented the Redskins from duplicating last year's sweep of the top five sectional places. Fri- day's showing was another im- pressive outing, as Sean Burke, Bill Demong, Matt Cook, Matt Dougherty and Zach Handler finished one second apart for Saranac Lake. \It's here. That's about the gist _QLit,!!_Cppk_said. \States aren't just a thought anymore.\\ \It's finally time to show the rest of the state what we have,\ Dougherty said. Northeastern Clinton's Jared Antkowiak (seventh place) and Justin Tromblee (ninth) also qualified for states, as did Saranac's Corey Davidson (eighth) and AuSable Valley's Matt Russell (10th). Tim Burke and Chris Moore round out Saranac Lake's seven-man roster. In Class B, Seton, which had some runners struggle in recent meets, finally put everything together — and held off Peru with relative ease, winning 30- 44. Peru's Joe McCloud was sec- ond and Seton Catholic's Patrick Larkin third; relatively routine results. Seton's good fortune came in the form of Chris Bouvier (fourth), Gabe Sabourin (eighth) and Jerrod Nutt (14th). \It was finally there,\ Wilson said. \Gabe Sabourin had a great race and Jerrod Nutt came back for us.\ Travis Bashaw was fifth for Peru, Beekmantown's Matt Drowne was sixth, Plattsburgh's Luke Morrow was eighth and Beekmantown's Mike Martino ran one of his best races of the seasoirtoiinish ninth; Those five runners are all state-bound, as are Seton's sixth- and seventh- place runners Friday, Jarad Jabaut and Asa Tucker.
