W While Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield agree that they are the two best heavyweights, they are at odds over who is No. 1. ,„ But they wilt settle the dispute with their fists Saturday night in a, rubber match butdbors at Caesars Palace. \We're the best of the best,\ Holyfield said. \This fight should be recognized as the true heavyweight championship.\ \Certainly we're the two best heavyweights out there,\ Bowe agreed. \Mike Tyson is No. 3.\ Tyson was to have fought Buster Mathis Jr, on Saturday night at the MGM Grand. But that bout was called off Tuesday because of a fracture to Tyson's right thumb. With the Tyson bout off, pro- moters of Bowe-Holyfield now are expecting a crowd of 14,000 instead of 11,000 in the 15,000- seat arena. It will be shown on pay-per-view television and is expected to start at abcjut 11:30 EST. If the Tyson bout had been held, it didn't figure to be nearly as competitive as Bowe-Holyfield should be. \Evander Holyfield is a com- petitor like I am, and we're just going to go at it, and the best man will win,\ Bowe said. \This fight will be better that both of the fights we had before,\ the 32-year-old Holyfield said. Bowe, 28, was a 2V2-1 favorite. The underdog won each of the first two fights. In two other heavyweight trilogies — Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier and Ali vs. Ken Norton — the winners of the first fights (Ali and Norton) lost the next two. Bowe won the undisputed championship with a unanimous decision over Holyfield on Nov. 13, 1992. Then, having been stripped of championship recog- nition by the WBC, he lost the WBA and IBF titles on a majori- ty decision to Holyfield on Nov. 6, 1993. During the seventh round of the rematch at Caesars Palace, James Miller, the Fan Man, crashed against the ring with a paragiider and action was delayed for 21 minutes. With the goal, Bedinotti broke the school's reg- ular-season scoring record with 18. \Tom (Bedinotti) is a tremendous offensive talent,\ said head coach Chris Waterbury. \Because of his tremendous scoring ability, we now call 'goal-a-game' Tom.\ Shaw, of Hilton, was the keeper for the Cardinals in the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association tournament last weekend. A deflection off a teammate cost Shaw and the Cards in a 1-0 overtime loss to Cortland; however, Plattsburgh rebounded to beat Ithaca, 1-0, with Shaw picking up her second shutout. The victo- ry enabled the Cardinals to secure their first-ever NCAA tournament bid. • • \Erin (Shaw) stepped up and played very solid in goal,\ said head coach Karen Wiley. \She played with confidence and poise over the weekend.\ Cable access to show basketball, football PLATTSBURGH — The following sports-related events will be televised on the Falcon Cable public-access channel (Channel 9): Monday, 7 p.m.- championship game of the Peabody's Summer Basketball League between J & J Excavating and Peabody's; Tues- day, 8 pirn.- CVAC football game featuring Plattsburgh High School against Ticonderoga. There was the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference reg- ular-season loss to Ticonderoga, where the Hornets simply could not stay on the uneven parallel bars. And just last week, Platt- sburgh came agonizingly close to ruining Peru's undefeated league season, losing by one-twentieth of a point in a dual meet. But Friday night, the Hornets put everything together. Platt- sburgh, despite not having a. single gymnast finish in the top five all-around places, won its 11th Section VII championship in the past 12 years, after edging second-place amd defending champion Peru 146.85^143.75. \This is a thrill,\ Plattsburgh coach Janice Trudeau said. \I always believed the girls had the capabilities, but you never know with gymnastics exactly what is going to happen.\ That's certainly true, but some things did go as expected. Beekmantown's Shana Fessette and Peru's Kim Swarts took the top two places in all but one of the four events, with Fessette winning in the vault, on the floor and on the beam — but Swarts, on the strength of a out- standing performance on the bars, took the all-around cham- pionship, edging Fessette 33.475-32.95. \She (Swarts) deserves it,\ Peru coach Laura Irwin said. \She's always been one of my hardest workers. You always strive for that.\ Ironically, the bars that lifted Swarts to her championship may have cost Peru team honors. . \Bars hurt tonight,\ Irwin said, after her team posted a score of 36.3, 1.05 points lower than Plattsburgh's team bar. score. \We had some falls and we're not used to that.\ Beekmantown finished third with 142.0 points. \That's about what I figured for us,\ Beekmantown coach Tracy LaFountain said. \We would have liked second, but this is good for us.\ Setpn Catholic's Stacey Frechette, who took second behind Swarts on the bars, was third in the all-around standings. Ticonderoga's Michelle Defranco was fourth, followed by Peru's Janell Levigne, Plattsburgh's Rachael Luck, Beekmantown's Cheryl Mackenzie and AuSable Valley's Emily Coonrod. The win obviously sweet for Plattsburgh, but hardly demoralizing for Peru. \We were so close against them last time, we wanted the satisfaction,\ Plattsburgh's Robin Frantz said. \Sectionals is the most impor- tant thing, and if we were going to beat them we wanted to beat them here,\ Luck said. Irwin disagrees. \The girls did a real good job. They tried and they fought,\ Ir- win said. \I think they have everything to be proud of. Being undefeated for an entire season, eight meets, is a lot harder than for just one meet. I'm real proud of them.\ The meet marked the last Sec- tion VII championship for AuSable Valley coach Gib Brown and Ticonderoga coach Marlene Strieker. Both are retiring from coaching. Plattsburgh High will host the state championships in March, the first time Section VII has hosted a state gymnastics meet.
