SATURDAY, NOVEMBERS 1995 PRESS-REPUBLICAN PAGE 17 ill Class B ByJOHHCORYER Staff Writer \StaffPhbtd/Mike' Dowd Plattsburgh High School's Jenny Meyer (17) and Beekmantown's Janine Ward (24) keeps an eye oh the ball during Friday night's Class B final against Beekmantown. M-- PLATTSBURGH - Jodi Forgette was at a loss pfor words Friday night, but her performance spoke pvolumes. t Forgette set up one goal and scored the game- winner in the second half as Plattsburgh High ||:\School defended its Section VII Class B girls soccer /itle with a 2-1 victory over Beekmantown at i/Seton Catholic Field. )' The Hornets, who trailed 1-0 at the half, scored . both their goals in the second stanza. \We had to get more aggressive in the second , half,\ Forgette said. \We weren't winning the 50-50 f balls in the first half.\ The Hornets tied the game at 4:14 of the second half when Maryann Liska slipped a shot into the upper far corner off a short pass from Forgette. Then at 30:22, Rayne Dingman found Forgette, who got a step on the Eagle defense and beat goaltender Lisa Denny, who came out on the play. \On the first goal, I didn't think about shooting the ball because she (Liska) was turned to the goal and open,\ Forgette said. \I got a through ball on our second goal and saw the goaltender coming out. I just wanted to play it into the comer.\ Beekmantown (12-7^1) grabbed the early lead when Jeane Coakley, who posed problems all game long for the Hornets, drove alow shot into the cor- ner past PHS netminder Stacey Brown. \It felt good to get on the board early,\ Beekman- town coach John McCarty said. \But PHS seemed to be more aggressive in the second half and started winning more of the 50-50 balls.* \But that's not to say we didn't have our chances in the second half. Their goaltender made one beautiful save with four minutes left, and we had another shot go over the crossbar.\ The Hornets, who improved to 13-4-2 overall, took advantage of field conditions in the second half. \I think the field helped us,\ PHS coach Jim Koniuto said. \The condition of the field on one end made it more difficult for them (Beekmantown) to play defense. We had that problem in the-first half. \We had to put things in perspective at the half. We were working hard, but getting cheated by not being rewarded for our efforts. \We hdd to stay positive, and not kick the ball around out of desperation being behind by a goal.\ The game featured two teams that ended the regular season on different kinds of rolls. The Hornets got off to a 5-0 start in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play, but tailed off some towards the end. The Eagles, meanwhile, went winless in their first four league games before get- ting it in gear. \We got spoiled at the beginning,\ Koniuto said. \It was time to make a charge in the sectionals. It was the last chance in the careers of our seniors. The team is a close-knit group anyhow and they were able to get it going again.\ ' \We ended the regular season with a losing streak,\ Forgette said. \We played well in our win over Peru (1-0) in the semifinals and that gave us the confidence we needed.\ The Hornets and Eagles split their regular season meetings. Brown finished with 10 saves in net for Platt- sburgh, while Denny turned aside six shots for the Eagles, who held a 14-9 edge in shots on goal. \In some respects, I thought we outplayed Platt- sburgh in this game,\ McCarty said. \The girls were very disappointed.\ Plattsburgh moves on to regional play against Gouverneur of Section X Tuesday afternoon in the Potsdam-Canton area. There are banners galore in the halls of Seton Catholic Cen- tral — despite the school's rela- tively young age. Not until Fri- day night, however, did one of the banners belong to the boys soccer program. The Knights earned their first Section VII Class B title with a 3-1 victory over Peru in the final at Seton Catholic Field. \The kids certainly wanted this: they have been some through some mediocre years,\ Seton Catholic coach P.J. Qondek said. \Now we want to carry this into the state tournament.\ The victory in the section final was the Knights' seventh in a rowTThey face SectionXchaffipi^ on Franklin Academy in a first round state game Wednesday afternoon at Seton Catholic Field. \We've got a good blend of some real soccer players, some good athletes and some kids from other countries,\ Gondek said. \When you have so many dif- ferent types of people, it takes a while for them to blend together and realize what they can do, but we're rolling now.\ Peru, which stunned top-seed- ed Peru in the semifinals, didn't fall down and let the Knights roll over them. The two teams played the first 20 minutes evenly. \They were a little faster and a little more talented,\ Peru coach Gary Edwards said. \We gave them a battle.\ As the half wore on, however, Seton's disciplined and creative short passing game drew Peru's defense into the center and ^began~sealingi;he offensive zone. \That short passing game is what has gotten us here,\ Section VII soceer capsules BOYS Class D Championship Bolton (10-2-2) vs. Chazy (14-5-0) At Seton Catholic, 5 p.m. Bolton: Three years ago, Bolton had eight freshmen on its varsity soccer roster - and the team won just one of its 13 matches. Today, those eight seniors — top scorers Ruben Caldwell, Jeremy Bennett and Matt Law, two-time team MVP and top defensive player Adam Railing, and goaltender Jesse Foy among them — are one win from a sectional championship. Bolton needs Caldwell and Law to get rolling, and Railing to at least slow Chaz/s attack. Coach Tom Muscatello's comments: \We classify Chazy and Willsboro as the two top teams to beat. One game isn't going to be easier than the other. My philos- ophy is the team that makes the least amount of mistakes will win.\ Chazy: Chazy soccer is generally equated with one thing — offense. But goaltender Terry LaPier has yet to allow a postseason goal, keying Chaz/s march to another championship game. The offense is clicking, however, just like it was in • the regular season. In the tournament, seven different players have collected at least one postseason point, with James Moser (3-1-7 in the two sectional matches) leading the way. Coach Tom Tregan's comments: \The fact that Bolton beat a Willsboro team which beat us during the season concerns me. It will be a tough game for us, since we're a young team.\ 1995 Postseason Road: Bolton beat Lake Placid in quarterfinal play and MVAC champion Willsboro in the semifinals; Chazy downed Indian Lake in the quarterfinals and beat-Crown Point in the semifinals. Season Series: First meeting. GIRLS Class D Championship Moriah (7-9-3) vs. Westport (14-3-2) At Seton Catholic, 2 p.m. Moriah: It hasn't just been a postseason turnaround for the Vikings. Take note: after an 0-5-2 start to its CVAC season, Moriah posted a 4-4-1 record in its final nine league matches, and have outscored three postseason foes 10-2. Speed has been one of Moriah's postseason keys. Maria Slattery and Heather MacDougal simply couldn't be contained by Chazy\s defense, and the pair each registered hat tricks in the semifinal. Coach Jim Wade's comments: \This is a special thing for us. We're happy to be going.\ Westport: The Eagles return to Seton Catholic, 10 days removed from winning the MVAC championship there. Westport's postseason goal-differential is even more impressive than Moriah's, as, including the MVAC championship match, Westport has outscored its last three opponents 10-0. Korinna Conley has netted five of those 10 goals, while Alison Beal and Katie Johnston each have a goal and three assists in Westport's last three outings. The defense has'obviously been strong — and must remain so today. Containing the midfield may prove crucial. Coach Brad Rascoe's comments: \Moriah's speed is a concern. They are definitely a good team, and they are used to some solid competition in the CVAC. Our defense has been holding up, and I feel we'll need to play our best game of the season.\ ' \ 1995 Postseason Road: Moriah beat Schroon Lake in the preliminary round, beat Wells in the quarterfinals and downed Chazy in the semifinals; Westport beat Willsboro in the quarterfinals and Lake Placid in the semifinals. Season Series: First meeting. — Capsules by Tim Reynolds Gondek said. \We don't ever want to just kick the ball which we sometimes do when we are ei- ther behind or sitting on a lead.\ The Knights gained their lead when Travis Zedick took a through ball at the 18, stopped to let two defenders scream past and then chipped a square pass to Chris Breuder charging down the left side. Breuder settled and fired back across goal for a 1-0 lead. \I've been telling Zedick to take the, ball and go to the the goal all year,\ Gondek said. 'When he pulled up, I was-just about to yell the same thing when he put it out to the wing. It was a great play.\ Brian Kiernan gave the Knights a 2-0 lead when, at the top of the zone, he corralled an attempted clearing pass and fired. - - - \If we could have gone into halftime down 1-0, I would have been happy, but that second goal made a big difference,\ Edwards said. \A team can sit back and play a lot more defense with a two-goal lead. Of course, they spent most of the night playing offense.\ Peru cut the lead in half on its first shot of the game, 8 minutes, 49 seconds into the second half. The head ball by. Travis Prue came off a centering pass from the deep in the corner by Kevin GraziadeL \We knew that if we didn't get the next goal, then it would be a game again, and that is exactly what happened,\ Gondek said. \Peru has had a great sectional run and are a different team than during the regular season. Seton Catholic's Brian Facteau tries to get around Peru's Damien DeLaura on the outside during Friday's first-half action. /;• If they had to go through the season again, I think you would see a different result.\ Sparked by the goal, Peru bat- tled the Knights evenly during the next 10 minutes before Seton Catholic re-exerted control.
