PAGE 16 PRESS-REPUBLICAN SPORTS SATURDAY, hfQVEMBEM, 1995 Peru unleashes offense on OFA By STEVE OUELLETTE Staff Writer - OGDENSBURG - The Ogdensburg Free Academy defense was good enough to batter nearly every team it saw into submission this year. The Blue Devils hadn't seen a team like Peru. Peru's offense clicked on all cylinders — and maybe found a couple of cylinders no one knew it had — while the defense stuffed OFA three times inside the 15-yard line in Friday's 31-14 romp in the Section VII/X title game. Peru tailback Dan Marbut got his chance to show all of Section X what it had been missing and he didn't waste it. Marbut rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries, threw for another score, recovered a fumble and even picked up 34 yards on a pair of hook-and-lateral plays. \He's just a tremendous all-around athlete,\ said OFA coach Ron Johnson. <f We knew he was a gamebreaker.\ *f . ' Peru survived three fumbles and a pair of special teams misplays — including a Blue Devil touchdown on the opening kickoff — to advance to the second round, next weekend, against Amster- dam, a 27-7 winner over Albany Academy Friday night. The game will be played at Bailey Avenue Field at a time to be determined. \We did a real good job of overcoming our turn- overs,\ said Peru coach Larry Ewald. \(The Blue Devils) are an excellent defensive team, but we felt there were places where they were vulnerable and we were able to take advantage. This is a great win for us.\ Seventeen seconds into the game, things couldn't possibly have looked bleaker for the Indians. Ryan Downie took the opening kickoff, then handed it off to Bill Payne, who raced down the left sideline 85 yards for an instantaneous 6-0 Blue Devil lead. \I thought we were going to be in for a long game,\ admitted Marbut. \But the defense really picked it up ... this was one of the best games we played all year.\ Peru answered back immediately, with a slightly less spectacular 68-yard' scoring* drive. Quarter- back Mark Golden threwtfor 33 yards and ran for 9 more, setting up Phil St. Clair, who took a counter handoff and broke to the left sideline, rambling in from 17 yards out. Pat Leary's kick made it 7-6. \You can't print what I was thinking after they returned that kickoff,\ said Ewald. \But after something like that, you have to come back and play the game that you planned for. Thijit'jyiras'''a big drive for us, to get our confidence.back itad reiter- ate to the kids that we could play with these guyS.\ Golden had another excellent game^fbr'th&Jn\ dians, hitting on 10-of-16 passes' (including his first five) for 124 yards. Later in the first quarter, the Indians reached into their bag of tricks to strike, again. From the Blue Devil 40, Golden threw a quick out to Jason Duprey, who then tossed the ball to a trailing Mar- buj>, Marbut raced another 30 yards before getting knocked down. It toofe him two more carries to put the ball into the end zone for a 13-6 lead. Three minutes into the second quarter Leary extended the lead with a 27ryard field goal. On the ensuing kick, OFA once again worked the reverse to Payne (they tried the play three times and faked it one other), who ripped off 64 yards down to the Peru 14. The Indians, who held the Blue Devils without a first down for the first 18 minutes, stood up strong and Jason Duprey knocked away a fourth-down pass in the end zone. • One play later — a .Peru fumble —• and the defense had to do it all over again. This time Rob Radawiec stood up Jim LeCIair at the goal line on fourth-and-3. OFA got to the Peru 13 once more before the half ended,, but time ran out as Howard Snyder sacked LeCIair. The Indians harassed LeCIair all night, forcing him intd ai^for-23 performance. Defensive Player of the Game Duane Godfrey was a particular thorn, intercepting one pass and getting his hands Continued Paga 18 AP Photo Alonzo Mourning addresses Miami media Friday after being traded from Charlotte Hornets to the Heat. Mourning show moves to Miami By JOHN PACENTI Associated Press Writer MIAMI - Pat Riley had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in Los Angeles and Patrick Ewing in New York. Now he's got his big man in Miami — Alonzo Mour- ning. The Miami Heat and its new coach obtained the two-time All-Star center on Friday in a six-player deal forced when Mourning, a free agent at the end of the season, rejected a contract offer from the Hornets. Miami gave up prolific scorer Glen Rice, second-year point guard Khalid Reeves and center Matt Geiger. The Hornets also get the Heat's first-round draft pick in 1996. Despite having to give up Rice, the Heat's leading scorer the past four seasons, Riley was certain he improved his team. \He is considered to be a franchise player without a doubt,\ Riley said. \Well beyond an impact player. \I think this team needs a building block, a cornerstone. I had the opportunity to coach Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Patrick Ewing and I think the only place we can build a team is from within.\ Besides 6-foot-10, 210-pound Mourning, the Heat will get two reserves, guard Pete Myers and center LeRon Ellis. Myers averaged 5.1 points for Chicago last season while Ellis averaged 6.6 points a game playing in the Spanish League. The trade ended days of speculation and rumors after Mourning rejected a seven- year, $70 million contract from the Hornets. On Thursday, Mourning reportedly turned down an llth-hour offer from Charlotte that was close to the $13 million annual salary he had been demanding. Knicks 106, Pistons 100 AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Charlie Ward almost equaled his career total with 15 points and Hubert Davis had 21 as New York opened, the season by defeating Detroit. Ward, the Heisman Trophyrwinning quarterback, was all but ignored by former Knicks coach Pat Riley, scoring just 16 points his entire rookie season. Bucks 101, Celtics 100 BOSTON - Vin Baker had 30 points and 13 rebounds and Todd Day came off the bench to score 22 as Milwaukee regis- tered its fifth consecutive opening-night victory, defeating Boston. Glenn Robinson added 24 points and hit three of four free throws in the final eight sec- onds to ice it and spoil the reg- ular-season debut of Boston's new FleetCenter arena. Rick Fox led Boston with 19 points arid Dino Radja had 18 with 11 rebounds. First-round draft, pick Eric Williams scored 14 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. ' Magic 99, Cavs 88 ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Magic opened the NBA season without reigning scoring champion Shaquille O'Neal on Friday night, and got an all- star performance from Anfernee Hardaway in a 99-88 victory over Cleveland. Hardaway scored 28 points and the Magic broke open a close game with a 17-3 fourth- quarter surge that turned a one-point advantage into a 94- 79 lead in less than six minutes. Bulls 105, Hornets 91 CHICAGO - Michael Jor- dan scored 42 points, making up for Scottie Pippen's early injury, and Dennis Rodman grabbed 11 rebounds in his Chicago debut as the Bulls opened the season with a victo- ry over Charlotte. 76ers 105, Bullets 103 PHILADELPHIA - Rookie Jerry Stackhouse had a memo- rable NBA debut, scoring 27 points in Philadelphia's victory over Washington. Rockets 110, Warriors 92 HOUSTON - Sam Cassell scored 14 points, including three 3-pointers, in the fourth quarter to halt a Golden State rally and give the Houston Rockets a season-opening victo- ry. Mavericks 103, Spurs 97 SAN ANTONIO - Jamal Mashburn scored 27 points and hit a game-clinching 3-pointer with 45.3 seconds left Friday night to give the Dallas Mav- ericks a victory over the San Antonio Spurs. Jazz 112, Sorties 94 SALT LAKE CITY - Karl Malone scored 26 points, in- cluding. 12 straight in the third quarter following a technical foul, as the Utah Jazz defeated the Seattle SuperSonics. NFL spspends Lett, Holmes for 4 By KEVIN O'HANLdN Associated Press Writer DALLAS - Leon Lett and Clayton Holmes of, the Dallas Cowboys were suspended for four games by the NFL on Friday for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. The suspensions were effective immediately and would sideline Lett, a starter at defensive tackle, and Holmes, a reserve cornerbackj until Nov. 24, the day after Dallas plays. Kansas City; They would be eligible to return for a Dec. 3* home game against Washington. During their absence, the Cowboys play Philadelphia, San Francisco, Oakland and Kansas City. \We are confident that Leon Lett and Clayton Holmes will be able to overcome this setback in a positive way, and we extend our complete support to both of them,\ Cowboys owner Jerry ^Jones-said—in—a -preparee^state>-- ment. Reports surfaced before last Sunday's game against Atlanta that at least one Dallas player was in trouble with the NFL's substance abuse policy. Lett and Holmes became the reported targets by Monday and each missed some practices. Holmes worked out with the team Fri- day. In a prepared statement released Friday, Lett said: \I assume full responsibility for any actions on my part that led to the suspension. ... I regret that this situation has occurred, and I apologize to my family, my teammates, Jerry Jones, the en- tire Cowboys organization and all Browns Baltimore-bound? The Associated Prm BALTIMORE - Gov. Parris Glehdeningwill appear at a news conference Monday to announce a possible deal that could bring the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore, a source told The Associated Press Friday. The source, who is close to' negotiations between the Maryland Stadium Authority and the Browns, said a deal still hadn't been finalized and details are apparently being worked out this weekend. If a deal is struck, the Browns could be playing in Baltimore next season, the source said. The negotiations come as voters in the Cleveland area prepare to head to the polls Northwestern blossoms into Th« Associated Press College football's best-known doormat will be thinking ahead to the Rose Bowl if it beats No. 12 Penn State on Satur- day. Northwestern, yes Northwestern, is 5-0 in the Big Ten and ranked sixth. Pasadena looms ahead. \A few years ago, people were talking about Northwestern getting out of the Big Ten because they couldn't compete and are a private school,\ Penn State coach Joe Paterho said. \Years prior to that,- they talked that way about Stan- ford, .and prior to that, Virginia. A few years ago, who would have thought that Duke would have gone to a bowl game? \I think all of those schools that do those kinds of things just reaffirm what a lot of us feel, that you can have good football programs without doing some of the things that a lot of people don't want to do.\ Northwestern (7-1 overall) has only Iowa and Purdue left after the Nittany Lions. The Wildcats already have beaten Notre Dame and Michigan on the road. \They have 15 Parade All-Americas of their first 22 guys,\ Northwestern coach Gary Barnett said of Penn State. \Then I looked through our media guide and I didn't find any, which puts us at a tal- ent disadvantage right off the bat.\ The rest of the schedule involving Top 10 teams includes Iowa at No. 1 Nebraska, Northern Illinois at No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Ohio State at Minnesota, Southern Mississippi at No. 5 Ten- nessee, No. 7 Michigan at Michigan, State, Navy at No. 8 Notre Dame, No. 25 Oklahoma at No. 9 Kansas State and No. 10 Colorado at Oklahoma State. At Lincoln, the focus will be on Lawrence- Phillips, soon to be sentenced for misdemeanor assault .against his ex-girlfriend and trespassing. Despite the charges, he's been allowed to return to the Cornhuskers. \It's hard to say what can come from playing these last three or four games,\ running backs coach Frank Solich said. Phillips hasn't played at all since Sept. 9 and hasn't played at home since Nov. 5, 1994. His absence hasn't stop- ped Nebraska from winning its first eight games. \We've done it without Lawrence Phillips,\ Solich said. \I don't think there is any one player we can't do without.\ Florida (7-0) favored by 49 points in of my loyal fans who have sup- ported me. I look forward to returning to the club in 21 days and contributing to our drive for the Super Bowl.\ Holmes was not immediately available for comment. On Friday, Chad Hennings worked in Lett's spot. Seldom- used Hurvin McCormack and Darren Benson also were being readied. Robert Bailey took Holmes' place in the nickel pass defense package. Holmes became a starting cor- nerback when Kevin Smith was' injured in the season opener, but lost that job last week to Deion Sanders. \Lett a Pro Bowler last season, had one sack and 24 tackles.
