PAGE 12 PRESSREPUBLICAN WEDNESDAY! OCTOBER 25,1995 STANDING TALL:- The newly finished • Bausch and Lomb head- quarters in downtown Rochester had its grand opening recently. The headquarters, a post-modern, sculpted tower , with cupolas, a glass atrium and a pyramid skylight, brings a playful dimension to Rochester's skyline of boxy businesses. \We were really determined to enrich that skyline, give it some human scale,\ ar- Fowle said. The AEDC announced recently that it has received a letter of intent from a company to establish a new venture at the business park proposed for Lake Clear. With a reported deadline of 1 July, the company has spurred town officials to hasten formation of the business park and con- struction of a 10,000-square-foot building by early summer. Ac- cording to AEDC Executive Director Ernest Hohmeyer, the company will be affiliated with a Canadian firm. If all the necessary parts fall into place and today's an- nouncement becomes reality, the new concern would begin with just a few employees and a goal of building the workforce to 100 within five years. Hohmeyer has declined to give the name of the prospective com- ,pany or an exact description of the product except to say it is clothing-related. \It will include finishing and enhancements,\ he said recently, allowing that the \enhancements\ meant decora- tive work. The town received a grant of $994,000 this past July from the U.S. Department of Commerce to cover 70 percent of the cost for an access road, bridge, site prepara- tions and utility lines to the pro- posed park to be located on 16 of 290 available acres of land near the Lake Clear Regional Airport. The Town Board passed a res- olution to bond for $275,000 earlier this month when the company was reportedly con- sidering another location due to its timetable and a lack of clear commitment from, the board. The board has also earmarked $40,000 for the AEDC to help establish the new company and attract others to the park. State Sen. Rona'ld Stafford; (R-Plattsburgh) recently pledged; to seek support for applications pending with the state Depart* ment of Transportation and thg Regional Economic Partnership Program. * The cost of the building, whicK would be leased to the new cont: pany, would run approximately $300,000 to be raised through a variety of sources including state and federal grants, private in: vestment and contributions from the town. The business park has been under consideration for more than two years, with four businesses expressing interest but switching to other sites due to delays in creating the park, according to Hohmeyer. Hohmeyer has said the first 10,000-square-foot building would be an \incubator\ with the prospective company an anchor tenant. The plan will be to offer subsidized rent along with . business planning and accoun- ting assistance to help companies grow to the point where they can relocate to their own plants. By KAREN GULLO AP Business Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Stocks rallied Tuesday, reversing Mon- day's slide as bond prices surged. A slew of upbeat corporate earnings reports and a stronger\ U.S. dollar also played a role in the day's action. Blue chip stocks gained the most, erasing a retreat on Monday fueled by cur- rency worries and roiled overseas markets. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 28.18 points to end at 4,783.66. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 10 to 9 on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume on the floor of the Big Board came to 415.45 million shares as of 4 p.m., up from 329.72 million in the previous session. Broad market indexes posted weaker gains. The NYSE's com- posite index rose 0.58 to 312.90. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index rose 2.00 to 587.06. The Nasdaq composite index _was__up__2.32 to 1,039.24. The American Stock Exchange's d g ket value index slipped 0.25 to 524.91. With no economic reports out today, investors focused on the bond market, a steadier U.S. dollar and a number of positive earnings reports, analysts said. \The bond market is very strong, reviving hopes for a cut in interest rates,\ said Michael Metz, investment strategist at Oppenheimer & Co. in New York. \That's what's fueling the mar- ket.\ The price of the government's key 30-year bond - surged more than one point, or by more than $10 for each $1,000 in face value, following a well-received auction of new short-term securities. Bond prices started out the day on a positive note after Fed- eral Reserve Board Vice Chair- man Alan Blinder said the \economy appeared—headed- for a so-called soft landing and in- dicated the Fed could cut interest rates. Lower rates reduce corporate borrowing costs. But interest- rate sensitive stocks such as banks and insurance companies didn't benefit from talks of a rate cut. Instead, investors seemed to focus on how these companies will fare in a slower U.S. economy. LOCAL STOCKS Courtesy Smith-Barney-Shearson, Inc. Member Mew York Stock Exchange.
