Threat to Amboseli park By HUBERT KAHL Deutsche Presse Agentur NAIROBI - A dramatic change is taking place in Kenya's Amboseli National Park, where climatic influences and en- croaching civilization are threatening the future of one of Africa's major beauty spots. Nestling at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, the continent's highest mountain, the park ap- pears to be undergoing a transformation from an oasis of green into a vast steppe. A thin layer of grass is all that can be seen in an area where mighty acacia trees once grew and thickets of thorn bushes pro- vided fodder and protection to a multitude of wild animals. The slow process of erosion has led to fears that the popular. nature reserve might one day turn into a desert. \There is a major loss of woodland,\ says David Western, head of the Kenya Wildelife Ser- vice. \The threat is real and we have to address it fast.\ Its dramatic setting at the base of snow-capped Kilimanjaro and its proximity to the Kenyan capital of Nairobi have made it the second most popular game reserve in East Africa after Masai Mara park.
